How much?!?
« on: 17 August 2019, 13:39:51 »

A friend of mine has an insignia 2.0cdti (around 2011/2012 age) which has a failed AC compressor, as diagnosed by his friendly local Vauxhall stealer in Leicester.

Excluding the diagnostics, they want £1600 to replace the item and refill his AC. :o.

I just can't understand how they arrive at that kind of number? Looking on the internet it seems the compressors top out at about £450, starting at £250-300 for Lucas/Denso. So even if you said the regas is £100, they're still booking 7hrs at £150/hr to get the job done. Which seems exorbitant.

I'm used to main stealers charging what I consider to be excessive prices, but this seems to go above and beyond!!

When my A/C compressor was rattling on my 2008 2.2 TDCi Mondeo, the local indy quoted £350 for a compressor change.  :)

I fixed it with 3 tap washers and a squirt of silicone for about a quid!  :y  ;D

My last compressor, supplied and fitted with gas refill, cost £964.16 initially, before a Vx compensation payment, in 2017.

So £1600 does seem very excessive.

Are they quoting for the condenser as well? :o :o ::) ::) ;)

Nope, just the compressor. His favoured indy wants £600 parts and labour.

Still, I guess all those free cups of coffee and breakless salesmen & women aren't going to pay themselves.

Simple.

They are car dealers, and have been using the 'think of a large number and then double it' method of calculation for yonks. :)

My main dealer wanted £1000 to supply and fit mine as the bearing on the pulley had gone. Brought a second hand low milage unit off ebay for £20 and changed the bearing myself.

On another note my rear shock has gone on my tourer vauxhall want £600 a side to just supply these as they are the self levelling ones which i have found out they are rare as hens teeth and there is no after market part for them
