Xenon Headlights
« on: 22 October 2011, 07:25:34 »

Hi I've got a problem with my x reg omegas  headlight. When i switch the headlights on the n/s one flashes on then goes out. Is this the bulb at fault or the control unit. I've never had xenon lights before so I'm totally lost when it comes to fault finding them

Regards Adie

easiest way to test is to swap the bulbs over and see if fault swaps aswell, if it does its your bulb if it doesnt it will be control unit or wiring, if it is bulbs you will need D2s  :y

Be careful when working around xenon/HID lights. Its possible to get a very nasty shock from them unless you observe certain precautions.I believe they must be left a certain amount of time after being switched off before any work on them.Cant remember all the details at the moment, but would advise you to find out before diving in there. ;)

Take extra care with the faulty unit.

My understanding is that discharge lamps use a very high voltage to get the arc started and then the lamp runs at a lower voltage.

The ballast for the faulty lamp may still have a charge stored of many thousand volts if it wasn't able to strike the arc.

Now this is something I know ALL about..LOL !   Last Xmas my headlights, bulbs, balasts, you name it went in and out of my car about a hundred soddin times
to sort the same problem out. After literally hours and hours, with my light doing the same as yours...it was the bulb.

DON'T get an ebay replacement...they don't seem to work properly...certainly not in my case.

If you need help/assistance....i'm in Felixstowe and work in Ipswich.

That was my thinking. If I ever need a bulb, it would probably be cheaper to just buy another light unit. ;)

I replaced a xenon bulb 6 months ago, tried some cheap chinese stuff......didn't work, tried a few of cheapo ones (around 35 - 40 euros per piece) - none of them worked. Than bought Philips xenon for 80 euros per one - working...... I don't get it but Narva and Philips are ok for omega, at least they work
