« on: 04 June 2012, 00:33:46 »
Not sure if these are the same but my company just scrapped a 55 plate 1.7CDTI with 60k on it. I know it's a different engine but these Astras don't have a temperature guage just a warning light. The AA guy who recovered it said they have seen a few where one of the coolant pipes bursts and it dumps its entire contents before the warning light can come on, you drive on with no idea and fry the engine. Ours was looked at and had holed a piston.

2.5 CDX sprung a leak on the last day of holiday in Devon, £600 recovery quote (I have AA cover now!), nursed it back to just past Salisbury filling up just over 6L of water every 20 miles. Finally dies when the layby I planned to stop in was blocked and had to carry on to the next, coasted into that one with no power and I discovered later an oil cooler plate with a 2" diameter hole burned in it! Recovered home for a much more reasonable £120.

Mk2 Capri burned out the clutch towing a scrap Beetle to the yard, pushed both back home.
1 week later the same Beetle had both nearside wheels fall off while on its 2nd tow to the yard, watched the first overtake me thinking "haha someone lost a wheel"  ::) Finally got it to the yard.

Mk2 XJ6 lost a con rod through the block on the M40, covered all 3 lanes in a huge wall of smoke as it dumped its contents onto the exhaust.  Recovered home.

And the icing on the cake.... MK2 1.1 Escort estate had the exhaust blow on the M3 just past Fleet, still mobile so decide to go to the next junction. Didn't realise that the gearbox gater was missing under the centre console and got gassed in the car, woke up heading up the bank of a bridge, steered it back down but just run out of space and ended up driving it down the middle of the crash barrier protecting the bridge. It then leant to the left and and dragged along the concrete with me finally veering into lane 1 and then bringing it to a halt on the hard shoulder. End result was a split sump, split gearbox casing, split petrol tank, split diff, front to rear brake lines ripped clear off and it looked like someone had taken a cheese grater to the entire passenger side. 3 fire engines, 2 police cars and 1 ambulance in attendance, the fire engines apparently spending most of their time trying to clear the mix of fluids as my car had none left in it!! Recovered to the yard, following week I went down picked up my sunglasses and walked away from it, nothing at all worth saving.....

General Car Chat / Re: Why can't people drive?! - Rant

I had a run in with a Golf GT TDI last week, on the A404, heavy traffic, 60mph he's glued to my bumper. I see brake lights a few cars ahead so slow to 50 but he's still there, guy in front then does the panic burying of the brake pedal and we all come to a halt, look in the mirror and he isn't there, next thing I feel his door mirror run the entire offside from rear panel to front door taking out the mirror as it goes.

Should be an easy repair unlike his offside B pillar that he wedged into the front wheel on the 16 ton box in the next lane  ;D the action of those protuding wheel nuts caused a circular cheese grater effect on both doors and the pillar  :D

Already got the liability admission from his insurer so now i'm hoping for a cat D write off and buy back  :P

General Discussion Area / Re: Hip Bursitis
« on: 29 May 2012, 21:16:43 »
My ex-boss had a hip replacement in his late 40's due to wear and tear from sports, they will do it just don't like to. The reason stated they like to hang on to 60 is because of how it is done, the spike with the new ball joint is driven into the femur, first time is fine, second time they need a bigger spike because the hole is enlarged, 3rd time you risk fracturing the femur.

In his case i'm fairly sure he was an early example of 'resurfacing' or whatever it's called where they don't chop the ball off but put a cap over it, it still leaves the issue of excess work on the socket but I believe that's a bit easier to work around.

I realise i'm hardly what you would call a regular but I stopped visiting so much when I parked the mig for the last time prior to scrapping. I suspect that's the main reason for the drop off, the number of possible members goes down with every car scrapped. And as an aside I will say that for an owners site we seem to have a more than unhealthy interest in reducing the numbers available(although I do realise that it's more profitable to scrap than sell in a lot of cases).
Rather strong adjective to use T. If Omega`s weren`t being dismantled to keep others roadworthy OOF`s days would be numbered, fact.
I'm not sure it is too strong, obviously a lot of spares are being used to keep others going but i'd argue that a lot of what's being sold is in fact upgrade parts because they have the big ticket value. I'd like to bet the number of Elite/MV6 being broken is significantly higher than CD and CDX for exactly that reason. When I knew my old bus was becoming a money pit I enquired after a couple of 'project' cars to replace mine and didn't even get a reply, a few days later they appeared as breakers.

I will also agree with a couple of other posts that their is a very distinct feeling of a clique on the boards, luckily i'm thick skinned and ignored it which let me see this board for the goldmine of helpful members that it is, others may not be willing/able to see through it though.

And not wishing to purely focus on the negative, this is by far and away the best car forum that I have been a member of. Not only in quality of information in the maintenance guides but in willingness to offer advice again and again to people who refuse to use the search button  ;D

If it gets desperate I have one but it's still on the car and I really don't have the time to remove it.

If you get an offer in the meantime please take it, if not i'll see how things are for next week.

Thanks Twiglet :y

The scraper, presumably, will only penetrate 2 or 3 mm from top and bottom - cant remember how big the tape is.  Guess its a job best described as 'fiddly' ?

Cheers

IIRC the tape is approx. 12mm thick.  You'll find that as you get started from one end, you will be able to get the scraper in square on from that end, and wiggle the handle up and down whilst applying firm, controlled pressure.  Patience is absolutely the key.  Lots of little breaks for a cuppa.  ;)  If you overdo it and slip, you WILL bend the trim, at that will be that.  :'(
Maybe a silly question but.. would the cheesewire that windscreen fitters use to cut the seal on bonded windscreens work as well for stuck on door trim?
Or an even sillier suggestion, take a hot air paint stripper to the inside of the door before using the scraper, it might just loosen the glue a little.

General Car Chat / Re: New Purchase
« on: 03 October 2011, 15:34:48 »
I can fully understand the urge to buy that tranny, 20+ years ago I bought an ex-diplomatic MK1 Granada on a whim. Toughened glass, armour plated body panels (supposedly bullet proof) and the inner rims that could still be driven on if shot out. (untested!)

I only had it for a couple of months because the petrol costs crucified me, I think I was getting 10mpg. Sold it on to a dealer I knew who was as curious as me about it :)
