When driving my 2.2 petrol estate auto particularly when engine hot. When the engine is on the overrun neither accelarating nor decelerating the auto box just gives up driving and the revs jump sky high temporary then it catches and starts driving again.Anyone got any ideas cos I'm getting to the point off driving it off a cliff lol.

I could be completely wrong here, but I thought it was only the FWD transmissions which utilised Neutral on overrun?

With the AR boxes, say, when exiting a Motorway, if the off-ramp is a decline, the box should change down to assist in engine braking.  I don't recall my transmission being 'in-limbo' as such.

I do get that sensation when driving Astra's, Vectra's and the like, though!

EDIT: Just noticed It's a 4 pot - Is that not normal for them?

Never owned a 4 pot, but first thing i'd look for is engine codes. Specifically, cam sensor code. Known to send auto's loopy on these.

Yeah it's as though the selector has just decided to stick itself into neutral and I lose drive for a few seconds and then wallop! It bangs itself back in.very unsettling and as it's my first time experience with automatics it will probably be my last.
Just to add checked Atf and it's to the level and looks pretty clean

With the engine running?
I risk offending you by asking but you wouldn't be the first to be fooled by that one......

No with the engine off why should it be running whilst checking the level? Like I say it's my first ever automatic and no I'm not offended. I have totally dismissed the slush boxed variety of car until now I guess. Maybe it's an age thing as I'm now getting nearer 50 than I am to 40 lol 😂

Because that is the right way to do it !!!!!! with the engine running the level is considerably lower than with it stationary .. so if checked stationary it is actually well low for running !!

Thanks for the info hoping this will cure my problem god knows how long it's been running like this as I'm the new owner just hope that the damage hasn't already been done.
If it's just dribbling out with the engine off how much do you reckon it will take to top up correctly with the engine running?

I do believe there's a "How to" in the maintenance guides on here for checking fluid level of the autobox have a scroll through there to see if I'm remembering correctly.

If it's only just above the fill/level plug with the engine off, then I'd reckon you'll get at least another half litre in.

Just found half a litre of dexron 111
I had in the garage from Lord knows where or when
So I put it in with engine running and still not enough 
I'll call at motor spares tomorrow and top her up.
Don't know how it's even low to start with there's no leaks

'Cos someone did the same as you, and "checked" it with the engine not running, thus draining a whole load out ?? which leaves it well low, as you have just found out ..

All together the slush box took just shy of a litre of atf and I don't know if it's in my mind but it seems to change gear much more readily. All I have to fix  now is the rear wheel bearing. And exhaust seems to have rotted all down the length on top very odd.
