3.2 V6 timing belt change - which kit, Gates or Contitech?
« on: 30 September 2014, 10:28:09 »

Going to do the timing belt and water pump on my 2001 MV6 3.2 V6 at the weekend.
Done a couple of these before and borrow the locking tool kit from Autovaux.
Which kit would you guys recommend....Gates or Contitech?
My car has done just over 30,000 miles since the last belt change and after having a look at the weekend the belt is now showing tiny signs of cracking to the belt.

Gates or Contitech?

Either as both are very good kits and both supplied to Vx.

Normally Contitech is the cheaper of the two (buypartsby.co.uk).

Worth checking the water pump bearing by wiping the Aux belt off and spinning by hand for play and roughness. If ok leave it be, there have been some sub standard pumps failing in short order AND the price has gone up considerably, especially going by reports on here.

New water pump is a QH (Quinton hazell) and I have no idea when it was changed last...but at least 30k!

I have just ordered the timing belt kit and was given 2 choices for the water pump,  mid range (never heard of) at £22 or O.E (Quinton Hazell) at £35 so I went for the QH.
I've used QH many times with no problems so happy to fit that.

I bought one when I did the belt when I got the car at 70k. It's still on the shelf. Mines on 115 k and still going strong. Still original afaik.

The failures mentioned on here have mostly been pattern ones at less than the 40k belt interval.

....I do check it regularly though.

QH were a good quality brand in my opinion, but I thought they were no more now so I would double check the item when it arrives to be sure it is what Autovaux tell you they have sold you.

PMSL, I'm betting my right gonad this is from Autovaux? They are so full of shit its untrue.

Make sure when it arrives, the stuff is exactly what you ordered, as I have found them to redefine the boundaries of truth.

Sorry but its not Autovaux!
Its just my local car spares shop.
Was offered 'First line' or QH.
Looks like I just won your right gonad! Not sure what I'm gonna do with it? Maybe dip it in 'Old Spice' and hang it from the mirror

Too late, I lost my right gonad in a previous bet. I'll send you a meatball instead :P

Campbells?

Should have said O.E quality not just O.E.
As long as it doesn't brake it'll be fine.

Ah, yeah, old skool QH were reasonable enough. Heard a lot of stories that quality went down the shitter before they did. QH are no more...
