I worked with a fella who lost control of a 9" angle grinder when it 'kicked back' when he switched it on.  Apparently it zonked into him at about belt level and cut it's way all up his front and just missed his jugular vein when it cutting his neck apart!  :o :o :o

He had a very impressive scar!  8)  Make sure it has a 'soft start' feature especially for the bigger 9" bad boys!  ;)

Cheap grinders tend to be larger, noisier and rougher than a 'good' one. I've several from £10 to a £50 Dewalt which is what I'd recommend. But if you're not going to use it much, then a cheapy will do fine.

Do get the thin cutting discs; they cut better and last longer. A grinding disc will last for ages. A backing pad and some 80grit soft discs are well worth having. Don't buy any of this stuff from B&Q etc, as they're blindingly expensive. Trade suppliers or Ebay are best. Ensure that you're buying the right size; 5" discs are no good for a 4.5" grinder unless you're moronic enough to remove the guard!

PPE is necessary, gloves and goggles at all times. Grinders leave a razor sharp burr on sheet metal, which will cut fingers straight down to the bone as I have the scars to prove. Run the grinder along the edge to remove the burr every time you make a cut.

With some practice, a grinder can make decent precise cuts, but your repair panels are still best finished off with snips.

Nick, thanks for all that info. Don't worry il be wearing a fek king suit of armour as I'm so scared of them.

I'll play  about with it with the disc off to see what sort of kick it gives  :y

As Al says it won't without a disc and anyway I think any new angle grinder will have the soft start.  :y

I have a £30 Lidl 9" grinder and that does. :y  It's just something to be aware of if you ever borrow one or buy a second hand one!  ;)

Careful first time , be aware of snagging  :o The correct angle especially grinding so the sparks run away from you and not in your face  :(

Will be extremely careful mate!!!! thanks for the advice.

We were cutting out a rotten section of a land rover chassis years ago and the guard kept getting in the way so my mate removed it. The disc grabbed, shattered and took a chunk out of his wrist. He needed micro surgery to fix the tendons/nerves or whatever it was. Luckily it wasn't his face.

When I was an apprentice toolmaker, we had to endure endless safety videos, but the one I remember most is the grinding wheel safety video. We were shown the importance of safety specs when a wheel lets go and the guy doing the safety course asked if there were any questions, to which my mate asked "what happens if the shrapnel misses your glasses". Clearly this amused us but the seriousness of it is, it would destroy your face.  :o
Having seen a bench grinder let go years ago, and the bits stick in a wall, I've become paranoid about the ring test and wearing full face protection when using my 9"er.  ;) ;D ;D

We all become far too complacent with power tools, just be aware that they don't take prisoners.
Link below is not too graphic but gets the point across. Some are horrific.  :o

Guard notwithstanding, had he been using the grinder the other way around, ie 180° so the blade was rotating the other way ie cutting down and not up, then the shrapnel wouldn't have hit his face ::)

The guard would also stop him slicing his fingers off...

Good points, well presented though :y
