Just moved and not familair with local garages etc. Off to France for a few days next week and the MV6 is ok, but there is an unpleasant vibration at speed. New tyres and balanced improved things but not improved enough. Old nearside tyre was very worn on the inner edge.

Bit the bullet and took it to the local Vx dealer conveniently just a few minutes walk away.

I've had some frighteningly expensive experiences with main dealers.  . . . . I'm just hoping that this isn't another one

Can they still get them

Seriously, if it's a trackrod, you'll get away with just tracking afterwards, but if it's the ball joint... a) don't be fobbed off with needing a new wishbone, and b) you'll need a full set up afterwards (assuming of course that they won't do that as part of the cost/job)

Seriously, if it's a trackrod, you'll get away with just tracking afterwards, but if it's the ball joint... a) don't be fobbed off with needing a new wishbone, and b) you'll need a full set up afterwards (assuming of course that they won't do that as part of the cost/job)

1. Yes, they checked stock for me, but only in black. Happy to spray it. Got to be better than the hole that I've had there since debris on the M40 took it out a while ago.

Nope. I haven't actually got it yet. Will post when I have details . . . . . and I know it is the correct part

5.25pm Phone call. Nowt wrong with steering suspension etc. BUT 2 illegal rear tyres. Not what I was expecting. Still doesn't solve the steering vibration or whatever.

Could it have throw a balance weight at all? Or may be a problem with new tyre?

I thought I'd lost a balance weight on the M3 after a recent track day..

.. turned out all five rear wheel nuts were loose on one side

Rear geometry can cause the car to crab if the thrust angle is off, and the constant 'correction' in one direction might highlight a weaker balljoint/tre, hence the vibration

Expect the rear tyres to be wearing either centrally or inside edges depending on pressures/loads carried and camber respectively...

  No, but next time I am adding "check wheel nuts" to my list of post-day tasks.. when I say loose, they were finger tight

Instructions to garage
1. Vibration at speed. Check and sort it please
2. Spare key knackered, broken inside
3. Locking wheel nut sets sleeve split
4. Tow point cover please

Initial Response
1. No worn joints or anything found, even inspected by their bloke that does MOTs. However, both rear tyres illegal
2. Stock list shows new one in stock
3. Price give for complete new set, sleev not avialble on its own
4. Tow point cover showing in stock but in black

Result
1. New tyres fitted. I had asked for similar to front tyres. Same brand, but not same model. front has Bridgestone Turanza, they fitted Potenza. Not a big deal for me. Car was markedly improved. Vibration gone. Happy 

2. Spare key. Disaster time. Was told no reprogramming required. Then told yes it was, they'll do it free. reprogramming failed, blamed on wrong key. End result, no spare key, and the one that used to work doesn't work any more. I have to use the actual key and then start engine ASAP otherwise alarm goes off.

3. Sorted

4. Delay in delivery

Nice bill      No charge for checking steering etc. Total £285. Compared with London, cheap. Ok, many here will be shocked, but I'm happy to pay, my car has to work for a living, and off to France next week.

Ignition on - all lights on dash.

Drivers door shut (although I'm told this isn't necessary on the Omega)

press lock then press unlock.  Do it a couple of times, just to make sure.

Ignition off and remove key.

Check it whilst sat there and smile when it works.

Nope. Sorry, didn't work. Alarm sounds as soon as door is opened and remote flashes when buttons pressed but does nothing whatsoever with the car.

The guy in the garage was using Tech 2 or something to try and set up the spare key. I think he messed everything up somehow.

No. It showed on their stock list as being available in another branch, but it didn't turn up. They say that it will.

b) Has any idiot been near it with a cloned, non-legal code reader well reknown for knackering ECUs?

A) No, or if I did, I've lost it
B) Don't know. If some idiot did then he was employed by a Vx main dealer  but who knows, just maybe . . .

However, took car back this AM, sorted in around 30 mins or so.
