Astra Auto clunk R to D
« on: 31 October 2014, 20:24:46 »

Also does it going from D to R.

We have virtually decided to buy a 2005 1.8 auto astra BUT the only thing we don't like is the distinct clunk moving lever from D to R. It drives well and is otherwise faultless. Gears change very smoothly. The dealer says he is quite happy with the car and he used it for a couple of weeks before putting it on his lot. He only has about eight cars for sale at a time and values his reputation

Could it be something as simple as an engine mount?

Very likely to be a mount or similar,if it drives and selects its gears ok and no warning lights are on then it's probably ok

The only similar car we had in the family was a 1.4 astra auto, that car would always thump from first into second gear until it had warmed up & then it was fine.
after a few years the sport light blinked on & off on the dash & it stopped changing gears :(

We have spent a week searching and viewing in what spare time we have.

We did check the auto fluid level (there is a dipstick)and it was fine.

forward gears are fine. nice and smooth including kickdown.

My Father had a 1.6 Astra of similar vintage.  No significant noise or clunk when shifting from D to R.

He also had a 1.4 Corsa (B) Auto which thumped into drive and reverse, even after a full Auto Trans service.

Both cars ran for many miles without issue.
