Further to my mention of road replacement...........

Steam Rollers were being used in my childhood, and I loved them. :-* :-*

Don’t see them laying road surfaces today! :'( :'(
Doubt they were steam rollers, Lizzie. Road rollers, maybe.

No, they were Steam roller Steve down here in Kent, making a lovely chugging sound, with steam hissing from the cylinders (and leaks}, as they went back and forth over the new road surface, with a shudder as the driver went from forward to backwards drive with the reversing gear.  The mix of steam and tar was something else to enjoy :-* :-* :-* 8) 8) 8)

They were a glorious part of my childhood in the 1950's scene for me, like the steam railway engines. 8) 8) 8) :-* :-* :-*

It was only in the 1960's that sadly all that gave way to diesel rollers, they were a complete bore to me! :'( :'( :'(

They were crazy things I think they were called dollies it was one cylinder petrol, you pressed the lever and it energised the spark plug and sent it hurtling into the air it was then up to you to control it

Oh yes, they were fun to watch! 8) 8) :D :D ;)

Yes, you don't see those thumper dolly things anymore. As I recall they never jumped off the ground more than a few inches. Henry and Sam acquired one during the series of Shed and Buried, but didn't get to see it working. It just so happens I have one to finish and paint, illustrated on the box lid and in bare whitemetal to the right of the picture.

The Life-size collection box for  crippled and spastic children. This always  seemed to be located outside the newsagent so I was able to lean my Chopper against it when I went inside to buy sweets. :)

Ciggy machines also outside the newsagent. I used to get my ciggies at 3AM with the aid of a large screwdriver.
