CD SAFE Help please!

Have been doing some more work on the car and disconnected the battery as usual. Went to input the radio code. Ign on, hold AS button down, switch radio on then 4 dashes appear. Put radio/cassette code in no problem. Then maybe went into brain fade mode for CD player.

Switched ign on, held down the button across the unit for CD (it is a 97 Elite with the sepaarte unit in the boot). then switched unit on in CD mode. All I get is PH-Vol-1 which I assume is phone volume set at level 1. It is a year or more since I used mobile phone on hands free in car ( I bet that is a record!) so I can't really remember how it all works. Tried various permutations with no luck.

What should I be doing please?
I also have the security code for the car (but no instructions) - when would I have to use that!! might be useful to know in advance.

Ign on, radio off. Press and hold 0 and switch on...
