I'm surprised  the swivel-eyed 'dervites' amongst you have not yet realised that  buying diesel is the equivalent of buying Betamax tapes.

The world has moved on. :)

Yes - to teeny tiny three cylinder petrol engines with turbos slapped on. How's that work for you? ;)

This part I like.

The teeny tiny bits less so. :)

For me? Badly

If we'd progressed to those 25 years ago, when cars were becoming hugely bloated and heavy due to cheaply available power from modern engines, they would still be working well. But when a 1.0l Focus weighs 1400kg and makes its max torque at 5000rpm, that's an unpleasant combination.

Yes.....

An average 1.0/1.1/1.3 from the sixties or seventies would tip the scales at about 750KG.......or 15 CWT in old money.

AdBlue is £8.60 for 10 litres trade from Halfords.

The XF seems to run forever on ten litres, the F-Pace gets through 10 litres in about 7000 miles.

There is a VAG build period where they guzzle it as one of the quick fix SW updates for the NOx scandal was to shovel more AdBlue through

If in the market, I could be tempted by this:

https://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201809220753225

I had the 140 spec engine in the CC, that was quite a performer mid range. 170 would be even better, VCDS is excellent as well so no issues troubleshooting

Honestly, I'd go for the newer generation - everything is a great deal better and (subjective, of course) I think they look a lot better, too. Only downside being that the 190 has a tank of pee you have to fill every 7,000 miles (the 150 doesn't).

What's the cost of that?

I suspect by the time the 3.2 has rusted out, the newer generation will have come down in price nicely.  :)

I think I've filled it three times in 30k, for a total cost of about £60 - and that's buying it from the garage forecourt.

I noticed the other day when I was in Hellfrauds (buying sidelight bulbs) Adblue was £11 for 10L  :y

I seem to fail to plan that far ahead ;D IIRC It's closer to £20 for 10L from the Morrisons petrol station.. still, it doesn't really factor into the running costs when you compare it to the devil fuel itself!

So let me see.

Derv is more expensive than proper fuel

Plus the cost of the AdBlue

Figure into the equation that diesel is deader than tank tops and your car will be harder to sell and worth less money.

Figure info the equation that your car will sound 'agricultural' and have all the emotional appeal of 'white goods'

So the appeal of diesel is what, exactly? :)

Some people are taking advantage of cheaper used diesels because owners are willing to take less in order to be get shot of them. :)

Not rocket science.

Few people are  willing to buy new diesel cars. :)

Yeah - I've always thought that selling AdBlue was the ultimate example of "taking the Piss". ;D

What's the worst that could happen? - it's only a tractor. :D

I'll buy used ones until there's none left. They don't suit everybody but are ideal for my purposes.

I'm not up to doing the maths exactly, I'm not too well today (Ahhhhhhh), but I do around 17000 miles a year. If I get around 30mpg from a petrol and 45mpg from a diesel, that's a few shillings saved, even taking into account the 3-5p difference in price per litre (or 14 to 22p a gallon).
