Where have all the scrappies gone?
« on: 16 August 2006, 23:00:02 »

When I first started driving 20 years ago there were loads of scrappies about, but now when i don't have a company car any more and need them again I can't find any (Bristol area)
Can anybody help? Only really interested in Omega bits
I'm not desperate for anything at the moment but it is nice to be able to get the odd thing e.g trim  bits etc

Its the same everywhere Martin. European legislation means that most the cheap and chearful scrappies have been shut down and only the ones that wanted to invest 300 zillion quid in a special pen-psuhing council idiotty waffle vale operated sludge licker have survived. They even have to drill shocks now to drain the oil out for 'safe disposal'.

There are a few left, but they are sgutting by the day. People like megavaux are good for parts - at a premium. I find it cheapest to just buy a whole car and take off what I want the sell the rest (usually for a profit too).

It is getting tougher though mate. If you get stuck shout and I can get most bits.

Yes it's a great pity but the good old fashioned scrap yard seems to be becoming a thing of the past. My earliest motoring memories were poking around scrap yards looking for parts for a Vauxhall Viva and a Vauxhall Magnum (the posh version of the Viva). I was always amazed at what people would leave in the boot of the car they had scrapped. I have also been disappointed by the lack of good modern breakers   :'(

Wimbledon. One of the biggest in the Country - if its still there! Also there are a couple by the blackwall tunnel. Come out the tunnel, turn left towards Grenwich and then there are loads along that stretch upto the woolwich ferry.

Not that I know London like the back of my hand or anything  ;)

Ronnie is right as ever - i wanted headlamp wash nozzles so i bought the whole car  :D it will be profitable

Used to love roaming the scrappies when i was young and my dad was after a bit for a car. Ahhh childhood memories of beaten up marinas, Mk II Escorts and Hillman Avengers.....

The worlds gone crazy. When I was a young lad I wouldn't think twice about climbing cars four high and they would be swaying while you were inside removing parts now the health and safety executive would have a right wobbly.

With my Sunbeam I used to get loads of parts from scrap yards - usually Harry Bucklands

Rear wash rear screen & wiper, better interior trim, double valve spring caps and duplex timing chain, gearbox, radiators, spare pushrods ect ect

Where I live there used to be loads of yards.  Now only a couple which is a shame.  All in the name of Health and Safety and the Environment.

I used to spend my entire summer holidays from school in there dismantling engines at the rear corner.  In those days the yards were mainly full of Mark 1 & 2 escorts, Vauxhall Chevetts, MK2 Cavaliers, and Rootes Group products (Hillman Avengers, the odd Hunter and Minx, Sunbeams and even, once, a Humber Sceptre MK2).  Rootes were always my favourite cars.

As I recall, virtually half of the yard by population was the Chrysler / Talbot range of products i.e. Horizons, Alpines, Solaras (an Alpine with a boot), Rancho and even the odd Tagora.

Happy days and enjoyed remembering them.  Sorry about the length of post (again)!

Sad to say most of them are long gone in Greenwich due to the Greenwich Peninsula development and New Labours white elephant Millennium Dome. A few small places left in Charlton going towards Woolwich but not very much or terribly good.

There's a place on Avon St in Bristol that caters for just Vauxhalls - All-Vaux - not sure what they have for Omegas though...

Place on the way to Frome always used to be good, been sat on the top of a pile of four cars watching the crane pick another car up and drop it right in front of me....

How about a seperate thread for people to post their favorite scrapyards in ?

There are two local to me, both very large.. One is the Excellent A1 which was used by Scrap heap challenge for a couple of series. I think the new EU regs have caused most to close.
