General Discussion Area / OOF Calendar?
« on: 16 November 2008, 23:07:31 »
I just got an e-mail from another forum (which will remain nameless), which is putting together a forum calender wire-bound with some fine examples of members' cars one for each month.

The price they're pitching them at is £5 + £2 p&p.

What do you reckon? Do you think an OOF members' gallery/2009 calendar is a good idea? Perhaps they could go on sale in the OOF shop too?

General Discussion Area / Google Maps

Is it just me, or is there a problem with Google maps?

I can load the page, but the maps won't appear.

Sometimes I have problems in that the bottom of the pages on here don't load either.

General Discussion Area / An American perspective
« on: 03 November 2008, 02:57:45 »
Gordon Brown flies into Washington , still an unknown quantity to most

people in the U.S, despite his bizarre appearance on American Idol recently.

In advance of the trip, profiles of the Prime Minister have been appearing in the U.S.  This column was tuned in by satellite to Eye-Witness News, Palm Beach , for a  preview of the visit:

'Good morning America , how are you? This is your favourite son, Chad Hanging, reporting. The President of Englandland, Norman Brown, is arriving in our nation's capital this afternoon to meet with President Bush. But just who is this guy?

Let's cross to our special correspondent Brit Limey.'

"Hey, Chad . As you can see, I'm standing in the world-famous Trafalgar Circus, with the House of Fayed directly behind me".

"So what can you tell us about Norman Brown?"

"Well, Chad , he has been President for some nine months now. He used to be Chancellor".

"What, you mean he's, like, German?"

"No, that's what they call their Treasury Secretary over here".

"And is he a Conservative, like President Tony Blair?"

"No, Chad . He's Labour. President Blair wasn't a Conservative, either. He only pretended to be".

"So how did Brown get the job?"

"He just kept shouting at President Blair until he stood down".

"But he won an election, right?"

"No, Chad , there wasn't an election. He did think about calling one, but decided against it because he was frightened he might lose".

"How can you change Presidents without having an election? I mean, it's not like President Blair was assassinated".

"That's just the way it works in Englandland. The leader of the party with the most seats in the House of Lords gets to be President".

"So Norman Brown was elected leader of the Labour Party?"

"Negative, again, Chad . He did raise money and have a leadership campaign, but no one stood against him".

"What, nobody? No primaries, no general election, nothing?"

"Affirmative, Chad".

"Let me get this straight. His party hasn't elected him, the country hasn't elected him, yet he still gets to be President. Sounds like a tin pot Commie dictatorship to me".

"You could say that, Chad . Norman Brown doesn't really like anyone being given the chance to vote on anything".

"Someone must have voted for him, some time".

"Oh, yes. He was elected to the House of Lords by his constituents in Scotlandland".

"He's Scoddish, then?"

"That's a big Ten-Four, Chad".

"So is he President of Scotlandland, too?"

"No, that's a guy called Alan Salmon".

"Hang on, if Brown's from Scotlandland, how can he be President of Englandland?"

"That's just the way it goes in this crazy country, Chad . Brown can make laws for Englandland, but not for his own people in Scotlandland. Not that it matters much because Brown has signed away most of Englandland's lawmaking powers to unelected European bureaucrats in Brussels , Belgiumland".

"That would be like stripping Congress of the power to make laws in America and handing it over to Mexico".

"I guess so".

"How in the Hell did the people of Englandland vote for that?"

"They didn't. Brown wouldn't let them, even though it was a solemn promise in his party's manifesto the last time people were allowed to vote".

"Couldn't the Supreme Court have stopped him?"

"Not really. The Supreme Court of Englandland is now in Strasbourg, where the geese come from".

"Isn't there any opposition?"

"There's a guy called Boris".

"Sounds Russian".

"I wouldn't be surprised, Chad . There are millions of Eastern Europeans living here now, mainly in Peterburl. Englandland has seen mass immigration over the past ten years, but no one voted for that, either".

"What in the name of Ulysses S. Grant is going on over there, Brad? We're talking about the country which gave us Magna Carta, saw off The Armada, stood alone against Hitler and invented parliamentary democracy. How does Norman Brown get away with it? He must be a popular guy".

"Far from it, Chad . According to the latest opinion polls, he's the most unpopular President ever. His approval ratings are even worse than George Dubya Bush. There's talk about him having to stand down soon. He's already promised the  job to some guy who works for him - name of Balls".

"Say again, Brit, you're breaking up".

"I said Balls".

"You're damn right there, buddy".

I went to Jaime's this morning and he helped my by replacing my EML bulb and clearing and checking my airbag warning light issue. I'd set the light off when fiddlign with the wires in the door.

Then Kevin popped around and did the Tech2 live check on my engine whilst on the run...

TB helped me to clear the codes and replace the EML bulb this morning and then Kevin Wood just popped round with a Tech2 this afternoon.

I had some "Intermittent Trim" (0170 & 0173) codes in the 45 mile run home from Jaime's, but the EML light hadn't been triggered.

On a run we checked the live feed with the Tech2 and Kevin Wood. My immediate trims seemed to be running in balance accross either side of the engine at around the 7 - 10% rich i.e. having to compensate by putting extra fuel through. The "long term" trims were up by 24% on both sides.

This seems to be the engine feeling the need to pump more fuel in than the normal trim level.

Possible diagnosis:

Too much air:

  • Air leak (as this is consistent from side to side it would need to be quite close to the plenum)
  • Better flow through the new stainless free flow exhaust
Not enough fuel:

  • Dirty injectors (I'll try some cleaner fliud in the fuel, but I am quite frequent with this)
  • Low fuel pressure (I'll get this checked at a garage)
Kevin and I realised that it could be that the free flow exhaust is giving improved air flow and therefore the 3-bar air flow regulator might simply not be man anough to keep with the improved air flow up as standard. Taking that further we felt that it might be worth (after checking for air leaks and cleaning the injectors) that it might be worthwhile considering a 4-bar fuel pressure guage to up the pressure in line with the increased air flow created by the upgraded exhaust.

Car is running like a dream though.

I'll keep the post posted as it were.

Once again, many thanks again to Jaime and Kevin for your help today; much appreciated. :y :y

General Discussion Area / London to Brighton
« on: 14 June 2008, 07:58:06 »
Hi all,

I'm about to embark on a mission. About 6 months ago in a moment of madness I volunteered to take part in my work's team on this year's London to Brighton cycle ride which takes place tomorrow. I'm really not looking forward to it as I've only had the bike out of the garage once this year so far. Oh dear do I regret putting it off until now.

It is to raise money for the British Heart Foundation. I know this is both very late in the day and a little bit cheeky, but I'd really appreciate it if anyone wants to sponsor me.

If you do feel inclined to sponsor me a small amount it would be massively appreciated; you can either just respond on here with an amount, PM me with details or even visit my online page supplied by the BHF

If not, just wish me luck. :y

General Discussion Area / MV6 saloon facelift owner needed
« on: 26 May 2008, 20:37:24 »
Anyone out there have an MV6 facelift 3.2 saloon with the self-levelling option fitted?

I have an Elite and have recently fitted MV6 springs all round. I want to buy new MV6 shocks (self-levelling option at rear) , but I'm told I won't be able to find the right part numbers without the VIN number.

If I could quote a vehicle that has these as standard then the Vx dealer would be able to get the right parts for me more easily.

Check out the Galley page, Myagemo has managed to get himself as the last poster on every single thread.

He's after an upgrade from post-counts methinks ::)

Wooo-effin'-hoo! I finally managed to find, and put the deposit down on, some 19" snowflakes.

I got a good price too, thanks to a tip from AllyM, thanks bud, I owe you one! :y

Bought from pistonheads http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/380525.htm

I did have a pic to Omega-Elite's car, but he seems to have broken it for some reason.  >:(

I made a discovery today. If you lose any of your plenum bolt caps, a plug for the end of a bicycle's handlebar grips fits in perfectly! :y

I can't tell the difference from the original part.

Anyone about to give their car a full on clean ready for the summer may be interested in the following links:

I know I'll be studying them in detail (pardon the pun), but the results in some of the pictures is amazing.

It's all a bit full on and confusing but the following key links (taken from there) just about sum it up:

Good washing guide
Detailing clay bar starter's guide
Basic waxing & polishing guide
Guide to Rotary Polishing
Porter Cable Polisher Importing Guide
Slow Cut Method
Back to basics interior cleaning

Stone Chip Repair Guide (Quite astounding, if your brave enough!)

This isn't from detailing World, but is a useful "decoding" page to help you understand the detailers' unique tongue. :y

My car is in the body shop. It only went in this evening and I'm supposed to get it back tomorrow, but I don't like it.

 :(

The daft thing is, I've only had the car for about 3 weeks.

General Discussion Area / Folding Keys
« on: 08 March 2008, 09:11:03 »
I don't speak German  :-/

But I liked the look of these as my facelift key is a bit of a big old thing.

Click here for German eBay shop folding keys

Anyone any idea of German, or even better how they would ensure you get a key suitable for your car? What is the black box with the loom hanging out of it?

Would the key be a direct replacement and work in the ignition too?
