When I bought the Beemer last month I taxed it from my phone by setting up a direct debit.  The seller hadn't cancelled his tax yet, but there were no problems and I had an email in minutes confirming the vehicle was taxed.  :y

Well this was probably the answer my mate sought, then  :y as said, tried to do it online, but it claimed it was already taxed, and wouldn't allow anyone else to tax it. So a phone call would have done it. Good to know, ta all.

No I didn't phone them, I did it online from my phone!  :y

Thats because your mate tried to tax it using the V5 Doc Ref No, rather than the New Keepers Green Slip.

as said, again.

If the New Keeper tries to Tax the car on the Original V5 Doc Ref No, the system will let you tax it, if the car is currently Sorn or UnTaxed, but not if the car is already taxed, obviously, however that tax (which now belongs to the Original Keeper) will still get cancelled when the V5 Change of Keeper paperwork hits the system.
