Ive got some scabby looking alloys in the shed and ive had a go at one of them to clean it up ... it will take me an absolute age to do  I rang a local powder coat company and they said they will each wheel for £35 but ill need to get them stripped first  So he said another local company does sand blasting .
Is sand blasting ok or would it be better to get them chemi dipped ??

Your local tyre place should be able to recommend a wheel refurbisher... My local place charges  £55-60 per wheel including removing/refitting the tyre... Takes a week but results speak for themselves...

By the time you've got the tyres off and the wheels stripped and then powder coated it will be cheaper and quicker in the long run to get them done by a wheel specialist

I should have said that the alloys have no tyres on . Im sure he said the company that sand blasts them charges £15 per wheel so inc the powder coat £50

Simply not worth attempting DIY

I'm no expert in such things,but wouldn't sand be too abrasive a medium to use on alloy?I suppose you could always buy some paint stripper and do that bit yourself,it depends how intricate the wheel design is.

I believe the proper refurbers use a combo of acid dips and sand blasting. They look a mess before repainting

I need to get my wheels done soon as I'm fed up with keep putting air in.  They stay at the same pressure for days but then take it in turns to lose pressure.

It was in south bucks, so no good to you, but 100s of others about.

I've used Prestine (in Woburn Sands, not their national agents), more expensive, but they had to straighten the usual cheese made Irmschers. That was about double. Not sure how much for straightforward refurb.

Ive seen some places advertising in Northampton that state 16" refurb £40 but refurb meaning a quick scrub over and paint  Probably more expensive for full acid bath or sand blast then paint  Then there's the mobile vans that are charging £45 for minor curbing repair and repaint 

If i could get hold of some decent paint remover id have a go myself but ive read that original vx alloy paint is a oppser to remove .

The last wheel I took to Lepsons cost £50 for a full chemical strip, tidy up the scuffs on the rim and repaint. More complex repairs, like a full diamond cut, straightening(only doable on the inside edges apparently) or welding is extra.


Considering the time it would take just stripping the original paint then prepping for and applying the new paint, there is no way I'd consider doing them my self.

Would powder coat be more durable than ordinary paint  I'm having another go at stripping them , doing 2 for a start .. i've sanded the outer surface nice and smooth and just got to persist with the paint stripper on the back 
The penny pincher in me says have another go  Then once painted ill get the new boots on . That will be all of the jobs done , it only took about a year

It`s a lot more durable, I managed to kerb one a while ago thanks to some idiot stepping onto the road behind me while I was reversing and then deciding just to stand there 

You can hardly tell it`s been caught, just scuffed round the rim, you can`t see it until you look closely.

Yeah very good Andy, that included the centre plates as well, they do a lot of motorcycle parts and the quality is top notch.

Depends what colour the car is, black suits white and silver cars.

My alloys are dark anthracite but I think mid anthracite or gunmetal suits more colours.

Black Sapphire is the car colour , i dont like the silver but would consider dark anthracite 

I think black goes ok though ..
And it wont show the brake dust

Black wheels on a black car might be too much, I`d be thinking gunmetal or mid anthracite

Had two sets done at different places, second place seems better but I expect they will eventually bubble up like the first set.

The original finish is far more durable than any refurbishment so i'll probably sort out the best four from the three sets I have in the shed and just clean them up for the next project car.

Personally I wouldn't go with black.They look nice when new but are a real pain to keep looking good.

Fixed that for you! Personally, I would avoid black wheels altogether as they just look like the wheelarches are empty. And what chav came up with the idea of calling wheels rims?

A lot of the black wheels look like steel wheels that the plastic wheel trims have fell off to me.

Are you using rattle cans?

If you are, forget the primer - it won't help.  Lay the colour on nice and heavy (without runs, of course) and if you are feeling particularly flush, lacquer afterwards.

With the punishment Wheels get day-to-day, unless you are powder coating, it won't last anyway.  Spend a fortune on etch primer, high-build primer, base-coat, top-coat and clear-coat...... it won't matter in 12 months time.

Yep rattle cans , there doesnt seem to be any primer under the original paint  I'll get the colour on and clear coat it

when I did a set of alloys from my Senator, I relocated a large thrust bearing from work to sit the rim on so that I could gently spin them as I sprayed them

I was expecting them to come back reasonable as they were quite scabby, so was well chuffed when I saw them ;y

When I did mine due to flaky lacquer-ok I didn't bother with inside faces as I'm not that fussy-I rubbed them down with 320 then 600 grade wet/dry used dry,used ordinary primer then silver alloy for the main part and steel for the spoke sides and bit of rim between spokes then lacqured the whole lot.Whole lot came in at about £15 for the four wheels!!!Wheels never even left the ground let alone the car!Several years on and they still look same as when I finished them,good enough for me more than good enough for an Omega.

Believe you can get the whole car done in that plastidip stuff.I'm sure there's a place near me that offers this.If not plastidip then something very similar.Been recalculating cost was just over the £15 for all four wheels done,partly because I went for siver alloy plus steel for the colour.So 1 can each of primer,silver alloy and steel and 2 cans of lacquer all bought at a car show @£3 a can,then couple of sheets of 320 and 600 grade wet/dry and 1 roll masking tape.masking paper was simply scrap newspaper.I suppose really they could do with buffing up to give a bit more shine,but lifes too short for pratting about like that.
