General Discussion Area / A slightly misty Brackley Dawn...

As the wind was low, and the sky looked clear, seemed rude not to send one of the drones up at sunrise this morning...

General Discussion Area / Caught out by the wind
« on: 09 January 2022, 16:42:00 »
A nice day today, so decided to go out with one of the quadcopter drones this afternoon, having a (correctly distanced) nose around Wappenham and Silverstone, and started getting wind warnings. So swung it round with still 74% battery remaining, to be on the safe side...

...and over a kilometre out, it was down to 5% so started force landing.   Opps, completely misjudged the wind today.

General Discussion Area / A wasted week
« on: 02 January 2022, 16:15:38 »
One of my tasks for my time off between Xmas and NY was to find a suitable replacement for Microsoft's long abandoned Media Center, which most of you will know has been my device of choice to sit under the telly to deal with everything TV related.  Well, actually, the search began a couple of years back, by getting a Humax TV recorder and a gay-ray player.

Well, the Humax is just about dead now - not that I mind, because it was shite really.

So a concerted effort to find a replacement PC based solution.

So, hear is the summary of all my trials:

Kodi: Shite
Plex: Expensive and Shite
Media Portal 2: OK but unreliable
MythTV: Didn't support my tuners
Win 8.1 Media Center: "Just works"

So after several days, I'm back where I started, and still using a product that got its last update over 13 years ago.

I think Win8.1 goes out of support in early 2023, so I guess I'll either have to do it all again next year in the hope something has improved, or just yank the network cable out of the back of the damn thing next year, and all streaming will have to be via another device.

I've been meaning for weeks to vacuum out the air vents on one of the OOF servers, really to reduce the fan noise.  I finally got off my 'arris...

The poor thing must think its Christmas.  Oh, hang on a minute....

General Discussion Area / Brakkers at night, 10 days before Xmas
« on: 16 December 2021, 10:21:13 »
Popped out for a couple of quick drone flights after work last night, to capture the tacky, chavvy Christmas decorations people dangle over their homes.

First 5m30 are up and down the High Street - the massively lit up place on the edge of town to the left is Mercedes F1, formerly Brawn GP, formerly Honda Racing, formerly BAR (and some might argue formerly Tyrell).  After 5m30ish, starts near one of the estates, and is full on chavtastic.

All of which reminds me, is it time for Xmas Smilies yet?

I wonder if log4j was developed using lazy bastard Agile?

General Discussion Area / E10 and lawnmowers
« on: 06 December 2021, 12:02:52 »
I'm guessing that my 2nd hand, clapped out, B&S Sprint powered Hayter Hawk mower is not compatible with E10.

So do I go for high octane, more likely to be E5 or lower, fuel, or replace it.

If I replace, do I risk getting a battery powered mower instead.

Anyone got experience of modern battery mowers?

Hmmm....

General Discussion Area / Arms like Popeye...
« on: 06 November 2021, 16:44:51 »
Today, I have been crimping 50v power cables all day, and now my right forearm is swollen badly.

What will the missus think I've been up to all day when she gets back home and sees it ;D

General Discussion Area / 30min outage this evening

At some point early this evening, we need to mess around with the internet connection, which will impact access.

Apologies for any inconvenience.

General Car Chat / Battlebus (not) Starting
« on: 13 August 2021, 09:25:58 »
This is a different issue to the lack of working glowplugs ;D

When parked uphill overnight, it tends to die a few seconds after starting, and makes it a right pig to start again.  Parked downhill, its much better :).

I'm thinking leak off pipes, but a quick glance, the *look* ok.  Would I see diesel around them if they leaked?

Its clearly like a pair of whores drawers currently, due to an internet connectivity problem.

We're on it, hope to have it resolved as soon as we can

General Car Chat / Sainsburys carpark
« on: 24 July 2021, 15:56:19 »
I was sat in the car at Saino's earlier, which she popped in to pick up some stuff she forgot/failed to get at Tesco yesterday.

So in the 10-20 mins I was sat there for, I saw....

A Merc convertible "park" with his nose stinking out about 7", causing obvious chaos.
An Astra estate reverse out of their spot, using a spare space opposite to reverse into, without seeing some lazy idiot had left a trolley there.
A Golf reverse out of a space, straight into some silly tart walking immediately behind.

It seems that everyone has forgotten how to safely operate a car.

General Discussion Area / OOF Memories
« on: 09 July 2021, 15:24:08 »
As OOF celebrated its 15th birthday this week, it got me reminiscing of some of the OOF related events I've witness, either online or face to face.  Most have cracked me up, some have been sad, and some have hit emotions that a true man should never have.

I was going to do a post with some of of the things I recall, but currently time is against me.  I'll try to do something in the next week or so, but I couldn't like OOF's milestone of 15yrs go without posting something.

Do any of you have memories you'd like to share?
