Oil leaks. (Big pictures)
« on: 23 October 2014, 19:15:28 »

Had a car on the drive today. Dryest cam covers I've ever seen. Driest oil pressure sensor I've ever seen. Dryest oil level seņor I've ever seen. Cleanest sump I've ever seen.

Except it was covered in fresh engine oil. Top sump?

Usual sight, although not usually as clean as this.

Where I think it's coming from, can just see a wash of oil from the top sump join

Similar pic but with a screw driver pointing to the area of oil seeping down, here.

I presume it's a case of supporting the engine from above and removing the sibframe?

I'm sure Daz did this job on one some time ago.

Not sure of the result though, might be worth sending him a text?

Using a hoist, we raised engine a bit. Subframe stayed put.

Did the repair resolve the oil leak?

No. Nor did the crank seal. Or the lower sump pan (which we did first).  I'm 80% convinced its the dipstick, but nobody can remove it, and we've all tried ;D

That looks like either the oil pump rear gasket or from the front edge of the right hand camcover gasket :-\

Looking at the second pic, that gasket between the oil pump case and upper sump looks a bit battered, (the black bit hanging out)... I wonder if this has had a new oil pump without replacing the sump gasket :-\

The pump can be changed without dropping the sump a fraction, but doing it without runs a risk of tearing the gasket (if fitted) or sealant bead...

Very clean otherwise  8)

It is indeed very clean, he's done a good job. Only to be disappointed by the leak.

Personally I prefer not to clean it, as the crap soaks up the oil. ;D although I notice mine is quite bad, with oil blowing back to the gear box sumps. :(

What he said. :y Or it's from the camshaft oil seals and is running down behind the backplate.

Cam cover seals are dry so not them.

Could be cam seal as I suggested last time I saw the car iirc. But, although the pics aren't as clear as I'd hoped, I'm convinced there is oil seapong from that upper sump to block/oil cooler join.

Oil pump is a gasket
http://www.partsbase.org/opel/omega-b-1994-2003-5-5-21-oil-pump-and-fittings/

Would it be fair to say oil pump removal, although possibly a cause, is not likely? In which case I'd suggest the goo in the seal from upper sump to block could do with re doing....?

Maybe the owner has some history with the car. Oil pump not a common failure, but anything is possible I guess.

Only suggested as there's no evidence of oil leaking anywhere else around the sump :-\
