Hi all
Trying to undo and replace auxillary bely tensioner pulley but nut is a bit stiff. Before I go to town on it can anyone confirm whether it is a standard or reverse thread

STD 15mm, remove, take seal out of pulley, clean bearing race, re-grease, refit. :y

Use a half inch breaker rather than a ring spanner ;)
Refitting is bft against the tensioner spring.

if it's really bad then a brand new pulley costs under a tenner. You don't need to replace the entire assembly.
Idler failure is a big cause of multi-pulley belt faults, not just on Omegas, so the few minutes it takes to loosen the belt, grease the idler bearing and refit the belt is worth adding to your service schedule.
Every other annual service or whenever you remove the belt for other work would be enough :y

Standard thread, but the nut is self tightening, so if its been on a while, it needs a long lever.
Regreasing is OK as long as there is no wear, and its just dry. If any play, notchiness, unevenness, replace the pulley. If you go to a dealer, some argue its only available as part of the tensioner, but that's incorrect.
We have seen tensioner pulleys cause the aux belt to fail, and take out the cambelt, which in turn takes out the valves.

My tensioner completely seized up and started to shred the belt.. but I was lucky because I had just pulled up outside the house and noticed the god awful noise it was making and switched off quickly.

Mine sounded like a fishing reel changed just in time I think

I suffered failure of the auxiliary belt pulley bearing driving from my son Jonny's wedding in Bristol to the reception in Dawlish Warren, south Devon, about ten years ago. It was a cold November night, I was about 5 miles short of my destination. Lights went dim, power steering failed, warning lights came on. Car still ran, but soon overheated. I managed to drive 2 miles further. I walked the last 3 miles to the reception.
AA recovered the car to my home 2 days later. I replaced pulley, bearing and belt.
I agree wite the above advice. Now I grease the bearing every 2 years.

Had the same thing on my previous Omega several years ago. First time I ever used breakdown recovery to get home. Luckily no damage done apart from pulley breaking up and shredding the belt.
Reading this thread has made me decide to replace the pulley and belt on my current car at the next service, which is due in the next couple of months.

it's worth doing whatever car(or machine) they're fitted to. Which is most these days, as ribbed belts are more efficient than vee, and make a more compact installation.

What's the best grease to repack these bearings? I think I might have used CV joint grease before with no issues, but I can't be sure.

Normal regular HMP grease as found in a grease gun.

Yes, anything thick and slippery, politicians excepted, should do the job!
