Fuel economy.. not bad!
« on: 20 August 2006, 19:02:15 »

That's about 2.5 weeks and 1500 after resetting it. Not bad for a 3.0 barge, especially with my driving style :D

Admittedly it's gone up loads cos I'm doing 90% motorway stuff now (use the 840Ci at weekends, so that's doing 14 MPG just now lol) and it tends to be too busy to get the speed up at the times I'm driving. Before reset it was sitting at 24.6 MPG.

There's a pic there but it seems the host is playing up and sometimes it doesn't show.

Anyway it's at 29.6 MPG.

29.6 is excellent. I get about 28 from my 2.5. Judging by the threads on here, there seems to be a huge variation on what people achieve. I seem to remember someone mentioning 19mpg in a 2.5!

What kind of speed's that at? My 3.0 (have I said it's an auto though?  :-? ) hovers around 26.0 mpg  :( doing around 80/85 mph (on my private road of course - just in case Hotel 21 is watching  :o  ;) )

A couple of winters back my wife used my car to go to the couple of miles each way to work (her car was off the road due to a skip wagon wanting the same bit of road as her at the same time!  :( ) She knows only 2 positions for the 'GO' pedal - all the way up or all the way down  :o and over the couple of weeks succeeded in getting my fuel consumption to 16 mpg  :o

Changed the image host so the pic should be more reliable now.

Yep it's damn good, admittedly the speeds are kept artificially low due to traffic most of the time, 80 is good but in reality it drops to 60 or even less a lot. Most of the M8/A8 from Glasgow to Edinburgh has only 2 lanes and you always get a few pillocks who think it's a good idea to crawl past another car at 58 MPH when the one they're passing is doing 56 (usually a truck).

As I said, my average before resetting (which is the average since I bought the car) was 24.6 or thereabouts, which I'd say is more realistic when I get to drive it properly 8-)

Try going east up 'Windy Hill' on the M62 where there's 4 lanes. It might as well be 2 as you get 3 lanes of f*@%ing trucks doing somewhere between 53.5 & 54.5 and the rest of mere mortals get to use the remaining outside lane!  >:(

Is that with a proper gearbox or one of those 3 pedal things where you have to change yourself?  ::)  ;)

Remember the computer can be wildly inaccurate. Unless you own a tech2, and spend ages manually calculating the real mpg, and reprogramming computer with the real mpg.....

*** How to get great fuel consumption figures ***

Start car.

Drive to the top of a very steep hill.

Speed downhil in D (auto box) with accelerator to the nail.

Quickly shift to N (auto box) without slowing down, then take foot off accelerator.

Reset avergae fuel consumption display on MID while maintaing (or increasing) downhill speed.

Take picture of avergae fuel consumption on MID with mobile phone camera while not slowing down and not hitting anything (tricky!).

Stop everything, post picture in forum and brag.
