Title: What Do You Drive Now in 2020...?
Post by: Mr.OmegaMan on 13 February 2020, 19:40:16
Hi all,

It's been a good while since i've posted on OOF! ...I do miss the banter and i do pop in now and again. :)

Now that the youngest Omega would be around 17 years old give or take i'm curios to hear what everyones drives these days. I'd imagine a good percentage of members no longer run an Omega for various reasons. Rust, Failed MOT etc..

So lets hear it.. What do you run now?, Should be interesting. :y

Also give the car you run now a little personal review / how it compares to the Omega you previously had.

Now i do know there are still some minters out there so if you still run an Omega, Comment as well... Is it becoming more of a challenge to keep it on the road?, How much longer do you expect you'll be able to keep it road worthy? etc..

Replaced the Omega 3.2 running on LPG with an Audi Allroad 3.0 Turbo V6 diesel a year ago simply as I could not get breakdown insurance on the Omega for continental touring. If the car had broken down the costs of getting it, and the caravan, home could have been around £3000 ... just not viable .. plus for personal reasons I wished/needed to stop crawling under cars every month !

The Audi is certainly a nice place to be, lots of toys, exceedingly comfortable, pulls like a train, handles well and is extremely stable as a tow car. As someone said when I bought it .. a car designed in the 21st century that was designed to tow ... versus a car designed in the 1980s where towing was not built in.

Costs wise... its only costing me 1p a mile more than running the Omega on LPG was .... I get around 38 mpg solo, 24 mpg towing .... I don't compare it to running the Omega on petrol as I never did that !

Do I regret buying the Audi ??  Not in the slightest, and I've done exactly no work on it at all .. it gets washed/vaccummed/refueled and driven ... I've literally done nothing else.... but it will be due an oil change and service soon ... the question is do I use Audi, an Independant, or try it myself ....  don't know yet ...

Do I miss the Omega ?? Certainly, it had "character" and a fabulous sound.... and very occasionally I miss "spanner twirling" ... then it starts to rain and I no longer miss it !!

:)

Merc ML350

As a tow car, it can't be faulted .... 254bhp & 457lbft, Airmatic suspension with towing pack makes towing dead easy.

PITA to park though even when it'll parallel park itself because it's so big and not exactly frugal fuel wise  ???

I miss not having a saloon car  ......

Lots of Omegas still on the road here in Spain. All stellar mileage. Haven’t found any places that do proper suspension geometry. We gave up on Omegas eight years ago , I think.

We needed a 4x4 so bought a Suzuki Vitara with a 2.0 Hdi engine. It has been good for our work and also hauling olive harvest to the mill. I use it off road most days.

Long distance driving became a trial as cruising speed is also maximum! We also needed two cars for security living off the beaten track.

Choosing a vehicle was really hard and we did consider briefly another Omega. Common sense prevailed !  Automatic and well equipped were the priorities. It was shocking how basic most SH cars were. The omega elite was very well equipped for the day.

Choosing an automatic wasnt easy with horror stories abounding . We nearly settled on a Qashqai before being put off by what we read, rightly or wrongly.

In the end we went for Volkswagen DSG. Then we decided we needed an estate for carrying capacity. Tried Passat , bigger than we needed. Settled on a Golf. At any time there were only about eight well equipped auto Golf estates for sale in the whole of Spain. Looked at some and quickly realised that most if not all had been bought from elsewhere in Europe and registered. No one here had been buying well specced cars during the crisis. Crucially lacking in service history record.

We looked further afield and found a good selection of cars in Germany with service history etc. at a price which even allowing for transport, agents fee and registration cost came in at Spanish prices.

All we had to do was choose all the extras we wanted ( but no sunroof)  and make the purchase. First car we have ever bought without looking at , in or test driving.

It is great for us. Plenty of power, dsg is excellent, got paddles for manual shifts, cruise and so on. Economy is great. We have been to Scotland and back twice. Will be going again this year.

I'm late to the Omega owners party
I drive a 53 plate Omega 2.6 CDXi (build date 2nd April 2003)  about 81k on the clock
had it less than 2 years, having driven Carltons for 20 years
I've had to lower my standards (late UK omegas have auto gear boxes ,NOT manual  ::) )
and fuel economy is not as good as the carlton ,despite being 10 years newer  :P
the Omega has more toys and it is a great car none the less
so I intend to keep it alive as long as possible ,no RWD Vauxhalls made anymore  :(

Still have my Omega Elite-but it's been on sorn for some while-split my time between Volvo V70[same year as Omega 20yrs old] phase 1 2.4L petrol and a [now]25yr old Volvo 960 2.9L auto saloon.I find both Volvos just as comfortable as the Omega the V70 is more economical and the 960 about the same as omega economy wise. The 960 is a straight 6 and for a large car handles pretty well-as good if not better than the Omega-while the V70 has the ex VW/Audi 5 cylinder motor. Both Volvos seem less prone to rot than the Omega.

Moved my Omega on back at the beginning of August last year at nearly 240,000 miles, almost 200,000 with tours truly at the wheel and about 170,000 on LPG!

This is its replacement:

3.2 Elite which is my daily drive and most days cover in excess of 100 miles.

I still get a grin when pulling onto the motorway and it just pulls like a train and can comfortably leave most other cars in its wake.Comfortable/handles well and I tend to ignore the mpg and intend keeping it as long as I can keep repairing and servicing it

I was a VX supporter for quite some years and had the Omega Elite Irmscher for about 12/13 years. Starting from almost at the end of the 3 year warranty there seemed to be always something to be fixed - a lot of issues with the CID for the Sat Nav, 1 engine rebuild and one new engine courtesy of VX fortunately. At 6ft 6in the replacement options for comfort  were a bit limited given the journeys to Manchester and Cornwall and so I switched first to the VW Phaeton and more recently to the Volvo V90. The large seats and leg  extension cushion in the Volvo was a major factor in selection. The Omega was relegated to station car for 3 years before being replaced by the Astra in 2015.

I had 4 Omegas one after the other. My last was 3.2 MV6.

My cars have to earn their keep, be reliable, long trecks to France etc, and Omegas couldn't do that any more. I don't do my own work, so paying garages was getting seriously expensive.

So, an '06 Volvo XC70 D5 for about 4 years now. It's been good but not without problems. Seized brake calipers, universal joints on drive shaft (AWD). Good load lugging capability, which is very important for me. Sufficient horses. I've needed to replace audio system due to buggered CD player. They've stopped making these now, I'd seriously consider a newer model. Sportyness, flash, and fun-to-drive doesn't interest me, I just need solid and steady, even if that means boring.

Still have Y154 WCT and despite people hitting it with vectras and golfs it has been pretty good so far and is now into the 121 thousand mile mark. but I don't want to tempt fate regarding reliability so will now shut my mouth on that subject.

There's a good variety amongst us then!

Just putting the finishing touches to my 182k mile ex police, before that starts getting used again. Then there's the MV6 which needs a Lot of Work.

But we also have the vRS, the FTO, the Lupo, the Lupo GTO, the 190, the Tigra, the Mk2 Polo and the Golf to swap between... So none of them do any real work...!

Mercedes C Class 2.2 Diesel Estate auto.

One of the easiest cars I have ever owned to do a basic service on.

Can't fault the build quality or drivability.

Only annoying thing is the crude foot operated parking brake.

Economy wise, higher 40's with mixed driving and upper 50's on a long run.

About 34 towing.

I drive a 08 Focus st & she will not get rid of her 97 elite, loves it. Starting to look a bit scruffy & getting quality parts is becoming more of a challenge, but if I have to spend a lot of time in either during the working day the Omega wins. It may have to go next year as we live just inside the ULEZ zone in London that muppet Khan is extending. Love the Omega, but when plod is not looking the Focus does put a smile on my face  ;D

Currently a Velar HSE 240D which will get replaced at some point by a Velar HSE R-Dynamic 240D as the daily, high 40s mpg, lots of gadgets great audio system and pretty good handling for what it is.

The second car is an XE Landmark 20T with extras, a stunningly good chassis and drive and can still hit mid 40s mpg on a good careful run. Shockingly good power delivery for a petrol to (over 300Nm of torque and it come in at low revs)

Plus all the overnight/weekend hacks I can grab from work

Sold my 2.6 in 2015 to a member on here & bought a very low mileage W210 E430 Merc  sold it back to the dealer I purchased it from in August 2019 & also sold my Hyundai Terracan to him.
Bought a Range Rover 3.6TDV8 privately & it is the only car in my opinion that is more comfortable than the Omega , also have a very low mileage 2005 Subaru Forester.

What came after the Omega .. let's see, there's been:

A 2005 BMW 645ci, a 2015 Ford Ranger pickup, a 2006 BMW 650i convertible, a 2016 Skoda Superb estate, and finally a 2010 3.6 TDV8 Range Rover Sport. Still have the 2006 650i, the OH has a 2007 Mini Cooper S that I occasionally borrow which replaced her Smart ForTwo (which she loved in principle but hated to drive!).

What would I have back in a heartbeat? Not the Omega (although it was far better than the Skoda in every way besides technology) - the Ford Ranger. I bloody loved that truck, even more than the RRS.

Hers had the same engine (better than the mhd with it's chocolate alternator/starter combination) but it was the gearbox - she couldn't get used to the lack of auto 'creep' and (being a learner at the time) felt like everyone was always up her arse, especially over speed cushions (of which there are many around here) because you can't straddle them.. a couple of people overtook in (clearly) dangerous spots, too, which didn't help her feeling about the car! She's much more at home in the Mini with it's classic autobox that creeps, and with a car wide enough to straddle the lumps so you don't have to slow down for fear of your fillings falling out ;D

I didn't mind it so much, but it's really not suited to anywhere with speed humps IMHO..

Still got the 2003 3.2 Elite, usually on LPG, though Mrs TB uses that as her daily.  Has the usual wheelarch issue, and the LPG seems to be hitting an age where components need replacing, though the filters are all original ;D.  Also, being chavved up, the lower parts of the front bumper have seen a little too much excitement.  Not sure on its future.

Also have the clapped out Battlebus - the storage facility I bought following not having a garage for over a year - and an X351 XJ Portfolio tractor version, though the earlier one with only 275bhp.

Although the XJ and the Elite are chalk and cheese, there are some things I really like about the Omega, from silly things like a grab handle for front seat passenger, to genuinely useful things like the stereo and satnav being absolutely 100% controllable from the steering wheel.

Certainly I would happily jump in the Elite and drive it across Europe....   ….though its much easier to get breakdown cover on the newer Jaaaaaaag

Yep ......what I need is 570BHP and 1150 KG, rather than 570BHP and a 'lardy' 1880KG kerb weight.

There is no way I could get anywhere near your 0-60 time with just 2 driven wheels..........but when traction is found it's pretty close. :y

Had my old stock 503 BHP XFR down the strip at Santa Pod a few times.

Glacially slow over the first 60ft. If memory serves it managed a best of 12.5 at 116 MPH.

Remapped car is considerably quicker but initial traction and grip is even more of a problem than before. Once moving though... :D

That’s as far as I will let it rev almost 8000rpm limiter I’ve self imposed due to costly experiences :-[.  And Done 12.01  116 mph with my old turbo on, running just 336bhp at Shakespeare strip :y since then I’ve fitted my own spec standard TD05 hybrid with 20g billet wheel and ported turbine area and tweaked the map, but Had to fit uprated clutch too after I put that thing on it :D.

Can't say as I've ever done a 0-60 sprint and only once gone for "I'll see how fast I dare take it" and bottled it before getting near to the cars top speed!

Speed is all in the mind. 100mph on my Velocette Venom in 1959 seemed jolly fast. Forty years later,155moh in my Senator was boring.

I used to attend hill climbs and sprint meetings in the 1960s. Competitors would turn up with racing cars, or home built specials, on trailers, and set fastest time of day every time. Then one year some guy turned up on a big Japanese motorcycle. After removing his wife from the pillion seat, he rode it down the track and easily set FTD, and a new track record.

About 30yrs ago I worked in a scrap yard where we recycled scrap electrical cables and associated materials. At one time we had 4 transformers[90 tons apiece]delivered over a period of weeks. When the first one arrived on the back of an articulated unit-the bed of the trailer was near the floor down between the wheels-we got talking to the driver and he said it'd taken them about 4 days at something like 4mph to get to us but as the police escort they'd had for the journey had departed the truck would get him home again a damn sight quicker!

I drive a 3.2 MV6 daily.
I've had it since Oct 2016 and bought it with 163K on the clock for £525.
It will hit 230K tomorrow.
I am hoping to keep it as my daily driver for at least 5 years and another 100K.

Once on an Autobahn I took a Volvo 960 up to 142 ish (MPH not KPH) mainly to scare the shit out of the passenger. I did bottle it and backed off. Not sure there was much left. Never felt an urge to do it again.

Fastest I've ever driven was in my late father in law's Aston Martin back in the late seventies around 125/130 MPH amazing how quickly you seem to run out of road at that speed.

Plan for March is ATF and filter and new exhaust.
December will be another cam belt.

I might have once pissed off an M3 driver by overtaking him on a downhill section.  He had a limiter, I didn't.  He had the last laugh though, as the road levelled out I ran out of steam a bit, and he slowly crept past.

In the right car, on the right road, in the right weather conditions twice that does not feel scarey.

I've been a passenger in a mad German's Audi 100 Quattro at 120 mph, in the rain and dark, and have never felt more afraid. After having our multiple requests to slow down ignored, our recommendation on buying his software for Lucas Industries was "Don't buy" which was a shame because it was going to be "Do buy"

I have also always been too scared to exceed 70mph. We all know that speed kills and the Govt. have told us the maximum we can travel at is 70, so Ive always assumed that any speed over 70 is the speed at which you will automatically die.

Speed does not kill.
Large trees appearing from nowhere kill.
Large lumps if metal hitting each other with people inside them kills.
Speed ? That's just a measurement of how much it's going to hurt should a tree or other object arrive in front of you without you knowing.

No, no your so wrong. Ive seen it on TV, in the newspapers, all over the place. SPEED KILLS. They wouldn't lie to us about that sort of thing. I mean, if they were lying about that, god knows what else they would lie to us about. We would be in some kind of Orwellian nightmare without even knowing about it.

Oh yes, those cars needed it as piston rings and valve seals all leaked oil, unlike modern cars! :o :D ;)

In 1970 my A40 was so bad, it used 1 gallon of oil for every 20 gallons of fuel.  The black stuff was pouring through into the cylinders until I rebuilt the engine! :D ;)

Way back in the early 70's I had a Ford Consul that on a drive from Thirsk (Yorkshire) home to Wiltshire I stopped at several garages and purchased a gallon of used oil for pence..... I used 10 gallons to get home ... leaving a smoke trial like a world war two smoke laying ship !!

One of the pistons had a hole about an inch diameter in it !!

Got home, filled it with tractor gearbox oil and left it to stand in a layby near a garage I knew ....  drove it in there the next morning, whilst still cold, dipping the clutch just as I arrived to coast to a stop....  and did a "deal" on an Austin 1100 ... guy offered me £50 for the consul .... I said I wanted £100 as it was a "goer" ... he said OK as he saw it drive in, never bothered to start it or drive it .... :(   I drove the 1100 home , packed my bags and left back for Yorkshire within the hour .........

It is amazing what we got away with in those days!  My smoke trail was so bad that a very keen, for her stripes, female officer stopped me in the A40 and said "your car is making a bit of smoke" (an understatement! ;D) , to which I said "am I ?" with a grin.  In those days there was no law about the blue smoke - if there had of been a lot of vehicles would have been driven from the roads - but she didn't half grill me about everything to do with my poor car and me, a teenage girl!  After finding nothing wrong, she stormed back to her patrol car  ;D ;D ;)

Often after traveling to the bottom of a steep hill, the cars behind used to disappear in a big cloud of the blue stuff as I accelerated away and the pistons increased the cylinder pressure and pushed out the build up of oil !

Good job Greta Thunberg and her like were not around then ;D ;D ;D  ;)

I certainly did my bit back then to create Global Warming! :-[ :-[ :-[

Pre Omega - Austin metro, Mark 4 escort, Mark 5 escort.
The Omega was Sorn in 2014.
Then had a 52 plate golf TDI
Last month got a 67 Golf R.

The Omega was the most comfortable. The Golf R by far the highest BHP.

Re the golf R - it’s the 310BHP and a fantastic car.
5 door I’m afraid - children and car seats in and out so 5 doors was essential.
Thought about the estate at one point - but didn’t need the extra boot space.
