What to do with my Elite
« on: 19 September 2014, 08:59:34 »

This is my saloon, not my DTi estate.

Facelift, 3.0, 100k miles, auto, elite.

I bought her for the grand sum of £200 from an OOF member. I changed the gearbox for a known good AR35 with new ATF and then changed both head gaskets to fix a coolant drip from the NS bank. At the same time new stat and cam belt kit and gm cam covers.

Mechanically she is absolutely sound as a pound. I would get in her and drive anywhere with no worries.

I love driving her, quickest v6 I've driven, comparable to my old 3.2.

Problem is she is cosmetically tatty. The rear bumper is the wrong colour due to the old one being badly damaged and both rear quarter panels have very poor DIY paintwork compared to the rest of the car due to rust treatment on the arches.

The car also needs a new carpet.

There is also v minor cosmetic damage to the bonnet from a lady who decided to park in my engine bay. Nothing structural and v v minor, people don't notice unless I show them

The saloon, my second car, is "MY" car. No dogs allowed. As such I want something that looks really nice.

At the moment, this one doesn't. Ideally it would need a re spray and a deep clean / new interior.

But it owes me nothing and is mechanically soooooo good and bags and bags of fun to drive!!

Rock / hard place!!!

Know your pain. Makes me cringe at the condition of some/many that are broken for parts on here. (but the parts have to come from somewhere, of course)

Will there be a cosmetically mint Omega appear some time soon, but with a stuffed engine, maybe snapped cambelt, for instance? In which case you swap over the mechanical/trim/spec you know to be good, thus creating a 'minter'?

The next answer may be, break it, therefore knowing all those good components are keeping other Omegas alive and running across the country. Having paid £200, you'll get a large proportion of that back in weighing it in. Being the Elite, it's chocked full of all the goodies people are after.

Next option is to pour the money into it, a full restoration, effectively. To be honest you've got the better half of it - what I mean is you've got a mechanically sound car, with rough bodywork. That's a lot more preferable to a clean shell, but full of mechanical niggles, and bits constantly failing.

Keep it as it is. It'll be reliable and a joy to drive, yet you won't worry about it getting dented when you have to park it in a supermarket car park.  :y

Man up ::) the carpet takes all of five minutes to change and you don't even need to remove the seats to do it...

Get a bumper the correct colour, again five minutes to fit...

If the quarters are sound the get them blown over...

Job done and all before October :D

If it helps, the carpet from the estate is identical :y

This.

Keep it good where it matters which is inside and underneath, and wash the exterior occasionally.
A scruffy but otherwise decent car that doesn't owe you much is perfect for everyday use.

And put a 2.0 GLS badge on the boot... just to infuriate the BMW driver disappearing in the rear view mirror a little bit more  :D :)

If I had the energy, I'd fit the 3.2 running gear into a MFL car.  That's the best of BOTH worlds.  :y

I like my car, but it is uncomfortable (read; yet extremely comfortable) in comparison to the MFL's I've had in the past.

Ahhhhh, it's just the interior is sooooo much better in the older cars.

I think we need a new thread.  Combination of MFL v's FL, Premium brand tyre 1 v's budget brand 6, and Auto v's Manual!  ;D

Early cars rust quicker and look dated, but other than that... not much ;D
