General Car Chat / Nigel Langs, alignment query?
« on: 05 April 2011, 13:38:05 »
I'm booked in for a full alignment at Langs on Thursday morning prior to a tour around Ireland.

They seem highly rated on here but I am wondering what settings they use? I hear WIM have their own settings which are not to manufacturers spec but Langs said they would put it back to the original settings! Anyone able to elaborate?

General Car Chat / Shock change BMW?
« on: 29 March 2011, 19:50:34 »
Hi,

Trying to get my bros e36 318i through the dreaded mot, one thing I aint done before is change a front shocker which is allegedly leaking, looks fine from what I have seen though, anyhow does anyone know if this can be done without employing a spring compressor? i.e. without removing the spring at all

General Car Chat / Corsa rattle?
« on: 16 March 2011, 20:12:27 »
Got a 53 Corsa 1.0, 3 cyl jobby. Seems to have a rattle for 3-4 seconds on the first start of the day, I'm thinking the hydraulic chain tensioner is filling up, any ideas why this would be draining? oil is up to the level and once started it runs sweet all day.

I know the chains can stretch on these but think this one is ok, any helpful tips or experience of these?

General Car Chat / £37 Trade club VX Backboxes
« on: 15 March 2011, 12:16:45 »
Lookers St Helens offering 2.2/2.5/2.6 backboxes for £37.95 + VAT with a £5 shopping voucher thrown in  till the 31st of March, got a letter today if it's any use for the members round those parts.

Not sure of the usual trade club price but that seems good to me. Don't ask me why not 3.0 but I guess they are only cosmetically different to the 2.5

General Car Chat / Repairs gone wrong, confessions!
« on: 10 February 2011, 19:04:37 »
I was talking to a mate about stupid balls up's etc we have made when doing jobs on cars and I wondered what others may be honest enough to cough to...I'll start the confessions:

Taking a chance with a knackered ball joint splitter when doing the steering idler.....flew off, hit me right on the fod, knocking me clean out for a minute or two! came round to the neighbours staring at me :-[

Bleeding the brakes on an old merc and couldn't get the bleed tube into the jar so stuck some bits n bobs under the jar to raise it up, including a week old mobile phone which didn't appreciate being doused in brake fluid and never worked again!!

Misreading the EML flash code on the Mig and needlessly changing both 02 sensors when it was just the engine being off  ;D I blame the missus for that one TBH as she was counting the flashes...

General Car Chat / GTR....Scary
« on: 19 February 2011, 21:45:52 »
My brother took me out in his 2010 GTR Nissan today, I have never experienced that much power before, 500 BHP, absolutely brutal power delivery and acceleration that actually made me want to puke :o ;D Launch control and 3.5 to 60 MPH

I will never get behind the wheel as I would most definately bend it.

General Car Chat / Dolomite V6 ?
« on: 26 January 2011, 09:01:38 »
Been thinking of some old motors that would accomodate a 3.0 V6......I know a chap did a scimitar a while ago which was relly good but I quite fancy a 210 bhp Dolly for a bit of old school cool!

Any other suggestions ?

When those 6 numbers come up this is going in my living room, I remember drooling over this exact one when I was 16 at fast lane sport cars in Chorley.

General Car Chat / Irmscher box is quieter!
« on: 11 December 2010, 15:42:34 »
I tracked down on Irmscher backbox for £45 and fitted it today, it's actually quieter than the piece of crap bosal one that was on it, mind you it was filled with rusty mush.

Irmscher one sounds ace over 3000 rpm  ;D ;D

General Car Chat / Dont even think it...
« on: 18 November 2010, 15:37:41 »
Was having a lovely think a couple of weeks ago about how great my lovely Mig has been over the three years I have run it and marvelled about how when going through it's 145k history it's still on it's original oil cooler, rocker gaskets, cats etc and has took me on some amazing trips all over the country whilst being a paragon of reliability, twas a lovely moment.....since then the goddam bitch has blown a load of electrics, fried it's pump relay, eaten a crank sensor or two, sliced my hands to pieces with it's razor edged engine bay, ICV has fell apart and is now limping aroud like a misfiring piece of crap, flashing it's EML at me like a tacky christmas tree light.

Do not lavish love and attention on your mig as it won't appreciate it, treat it like a pig and it will probably run forever ;)

It has the weekend to get a grip, respond to my tinkering, or it's frag food!!! >:(

I love it really :'(
