General Car Chat / WIM
« on: 19 September 2010, 09:05:17 »
Had my geometry checked and realigned at Chesham on Friday. What a very impressive operation, with very knowledgeable guys doing the work. The OOF discount was well worth having, and the car feels much better, even though I had not noticed any real problems. It just handles better all round. It was well worth the visit, and I thoroughly recommend them. I got them to re-balance the front wheels also, as I had a slight vibration at 70 and was impressed that instead of the normal cone centre mounting on the balancer, they use stud mountings, as they note the the centre hole may be slightly off centre, and the wheel should be balanced as fitted to the car (Of course! duh) Very impressive. :y :y :y

General Car Chat / Toyota recall
« on: 04 February 2010, 09:22:55 »
An item in yesterday's paper reported a 911 call from a passenger in a 2009 Lexus ES350 to the effect that....' the accelerator's stuck, ....there's no brakes.......we're approaching an intersection' etc. The vehicle subsequently crashed, killing the occupants.
Not knowing the type of car, I find it hard to understand that someone had time to make a phone call, and yet the driver - an off-duty Highway patrol officer - was unable to either switch off, apply the parking brake, or select neutral, during that time.

General Car Chat / Is a Range Rover the 4x4 for this weather?
« on: 07 January 2010, 18:50:31 »
There seem to be a few members who also have Range Rovers. I'm toying with the thought of being able to go out in this sort of weather. Any advice on buying one second hand, apart from FSH etc, any particular model to go for? All opinions welcomed, thinking up to £5000:-/ :y

General Car Chat / Fuel consumption
« on: 31 December 2009, 15:22:53 »
It has been mentioned previously that chipped 2.5 tractors get better fuel figures than standard. I certainly get better figures on the computer readout, it went up by about 10m.p.g. as soon as it was chipped, but empirical tests show that there is virtually no improvement on either long journeys or local. I would be interested to know why the  chipping affects the readout this way. Also, have others carried out proper mpg test before and after chipping?

TIA

General Car Chat / Abbreviations and acronyms.

Would it be possible for the Mods to post a list of definitions of all the different abbreviations used? I can work out some of them, but many pass me by. Pretty please :-? :-? :-?

General Car Chat / Insignia seats
« on: 08 December 2009, 16:47:23 »
Sat in an Insignia SE today to check it out. The seats are b****y uncomfortable, very firm and with a very short squab, so little thigh support for us lankys. You would not want to drive in one for any distance.
I would not buy one of those. How can a company that designed the superbly comfortable mig seats come up with such a crap design? The first part of any car design should be comfortable seats.

Then I sat in the cheaper S, which has more comfortable seats! Go figure!
