What's the best way....

.... to remove a welded on brake disc?  ???

I need to change the rear discs and pads on the Mondeo and made a start this afternoon, only to find that the disc is welded on.  ::)

When I did the fronts last year I smacked 7 bells out of them with the sledgey.  One came off whole, the other in pieces....  :D

Given it's New Years Day and some of the neighbours have family and friends round, I refrained being a considerate chap, so squirted lots of WD40 around and gave it some light taps with the hammer.  ::)

Tomorrow however....  ;D

Unless someone comes up with a better solution.  Heat perhaps?  ???  :-\

Gentle manipulation with 'sledgy the hammer' should see you right.

Must admit my first thought was heat,but would that run the risk of damaging the bearing in some way?Best rust buster I've found is a 50/50 mix of atf-u and acetone.Local stealer uses your primary method of "Sammy".

No special tools available.  :(

I have a range of hammers in different sizes, a blowtorch and a gurt big iron bar....  :-\   :)

I havn't taken the caliper bracket off yet, but I took off the caliper and took out the disc screw, gave the disc a tap with the hammer and it's rock solid.  ::)

I had this problem on the MV6 last month.

I tried a little 'light persuasion' but I wasn't prepared to hit it hard enough to make it let go.

Plan B was to take out the retaining screw and wheel bolts - started the engine, stuck it in 'drive' and applied the brake repeatedly until the disc released it's grip on the hub.  :y

The disc can't go anywhere because the caliper is holding it in place.

Edit - the drag in the gearbox is enough to turn the wheels so no need to apply lots of throttle - just press the brake each time the disc starts turning at about walking pace until it eventually lets go.

Is the hub bolted to the trailing arm?

If yes, unbolt it and place the disc face up on a couple of blocks and smash ten bells of shit out of the centre of it to knock the hub off the disc ::)

OK are they deep sleepers  ??? good, won`t take you more then 30 minutes to get the job done if you start it now  ;D
I never hammer from the rear of the disc, there`s always a risk of hitting & deforming the caliper bracket  mounting points. hammer it diagonally across the front face.
The folks next door will just think you`re ringing in the new year......again  :-X
