I used to have a similar boiler and, IIRC, the button is just a circuit breaker - like device that pops out when  an error condition is detected.

Seems clear to me that the "gas safe" guy is nothing of the sort and has broken it?

You can see the device in this picture, top right, if I'm correct?

Either way, spares appear to be available, so he should be supplying one, IMHO.

I'm guessing it only sees occasional use so the payback time from an early replacement for a more efficient boiler would be so long you might as well fix this one?

Actually it's in use every day, we have a very busy booking schedule. Hence our urgent need for a fix of some sort. I'll go down after dinner and if you don't mind I'll PM you a photo of the panel and switch .

Thanks Kevin. TBH it doesn't look like either of those, but first one was similar. It may be a CB, but with the flame pic. alongside I guessed it is an igniter button. It is now loose in its mounting hole, it is spring loaded, but you can't see the spring with the panel removed as it is inside a black sealed unit about 1" square.

Hi peeps, I am involved with a small Charity running our Village Hall. Today a 'Gas Safe' engineer arrived to do the annual service on one of our Hall boilers, a 15yr old VC GB 242EH Vaillant, which has given us trouble free heating since installation, including just before the service, and advised us on completion that it would not light up and it was a timer problem.
I am informed that the push button (ignition?) switch (has a pic. of a flame next to it) on the main switch panel came out of its housing as the panel was removed, and was then pushed back in, and suspect this may be the problem. The panel has been removed, and the push button goes into a sealed switch unit behind, and we have been unable utilise the terminals on the unit to get it to run.

We are unable to get another qualified engineer for two days, and the 'Gas Safe' engineer is, unsurprisingly, 'unavailable'. (Further action is proposed in his case.)

1. All fuses have been checked and there is switched power to the boiler from the serviceable (checked by leccy) timeswitch. Is there any other simple thing that a good DIYer or electrician could check?

2. As Vaillant want an exorbitant price to send an engineer out, never mind repair it, we feel that if we are unable to get it going cheaply, we should replace the boiler with a modern condenser. Could anyone recommend a suitable reliable boiler to supply ten 1000mm x 600mm double radiators. No hot water supply required. I am sure there must be an OOFer who can help.

I am glad to see this crook got what he deserved, but I am un easy about the fact that he appears to be a sacrificial lamb.
There were many of them doing what he did (and worse in some cases) who are still sitting in the commons, and that makes me angry.

Me too, as you say, he is a token sacrifice. Begone to the lot of them.

Worst car (poor starting and rust) = Mk1 Cortina
Most reliable = '59 1192cc 34 bhp Beetle (owned for 13 yrs)
Most comfortable = Jaguar XJ6 (Also the thirstiest)
Enjoyed owning the most = '53 Mk1 Consul, probably because I used to rally it back in the day.
But I still love the Omega after 12 years, it only has to go one year more to beat the Beetle for reliability also!

As a teenager I worked a garage forecourt ... in the days before "self service" ... from my point of view the best customers were those who wanted 4 gallons of "best" (5 star) .. simple reason ... it was 4s 11d a gallon, they would pay a pound and allow me to keep the change if I had done the tyres, oil and windscreen .. so I made 4d ... doesn't sound a lot but my wages were 2s 6d an hour.



Putting that into modern amounts .... 4s 11d ... a fraction under 25p a gallon ... 2s 6d an hour ... 12.5 p an hour... a 4d just under 2p .... but .. looked at another way ...

2s 6d (30d) an hour was .5d per minute so a 4d tip was the equivalent of 8 minutes work ....

So if someone today is on £12 an hour it would be a £1 60p tip .. and I don't see many folks giving £1 60p just to have their tyres and oil checked and the windscreen cleaned .. !!!!

Everything is relative ....

On mine you can just remove and refit the AAV without loss of water.

How does that work, then?

I should mention I've only come across the stand-alone ones that sit on the top of a 15mm pipe, and that was in my previous dwelling so memory might be a little vague. I'm sure on the one I had you could turn the cylinder about 1/4 of a turn in its' base to isolate it from the system.

In any case, not a difficult or expensive fix.

Mine is similar Kevin, but even with a pressure leak from an AAV, it should still be possible to replace with very limited water loss due to the very small bore of the exit hole.

That is not a pressure relief valve, it is an automatic air vent. If leaking it is easy to change, just means a seal has gone in the vent.  Any plumbers merchant will have them.

Actually, I've just noticed that my boiler keeps losing pressure and appears to have developed a slight leak from the pump area. Could be the relief valve, which sits atop the pump, but I'm not sufficiently competent to get involved, so I guess a call to Vokera is in order (followed by a huge bill.  )

If your leak is from a valve connection, it may just require a   fitting tightening, but if the leak is via the relief valve outlet. it is almost certainly a piece of debris lodged under the valve seat. Operate the safety valve several times (it should have a lever to allow this) and this should flush the debris out. This is a very common fault. HTH
