Shit couple of hours
« on: 18 December 2019, 16:39:30 »

I was looking out of an upstairs window earlier and saw that Poppy, one of the horses over the way, was down in the mud with Brenda, her 86 year old owner, standing over her. I went straight over and it was obvious that the horse was in a bad way. It broke my heart watching her trying to get up and falling back down again. I laid in the mud with my body across her neck to stop her trying to get up and did my best to comfort her, but her eyes were rolling and I knew it was the end for her.
It seemed like hours till the vet came (probably about 20 minutes) and, as Brenda was in bits, he asked me to hold her head down while he put her to sleep. I know next to nothing about horses, although I knew, at 28, this one had had a good innings. It was sad to see such a magnificent beast lying helpless and, once it was done, just covered in a tarpaulin till someone came to take her away.
Very sad.

Just been back over to the yard. A woman arrived in a truck, dropped the tailgate and unceremoniously winched Poppy into the back of it. I don't know what else I expected exactly, there isn't a nice way to move three quarters of a ton of dead animal, I suppose.  :(

Tell you one thing, I wouldn't make a very good farmer.

Do you know Stemo I've seen every kind of injury that can befall a human being & I can cope easily with it but when it comes to animals I go to bits, top man for staying with the lady & the horse, well done.

I suspect if you were, you would cope better, as you become more immune to it.

Well done Steve, not much fun to be had out of that. But on the positive side, there will be a lot of nice German steaks from the remains. :y

What? Too soon? ::)

Didn't realise that was a thing. I certainly never found one in 20+ years of travelling to Munich regularly. ;)

And well done STMO for making someone's sh1t day a little more tolerable.

I'll eat anything on four legs.

Had Ostrich recently but wouldn't again as it was tough and chewy like an oversized turkey.

Apparently not. The drug the vet used means the carcass has to be burned.
