It's not what the police were actually doing that is necessarily at fault, but the perception that their face to the public instills. I've experienced this too. Their communications with members of the public is abysmal at the moment, at a time when they are percieved to have plenty of resources for dealing efficiently with people who stray a couple of MPH over the speed limit.

"Here's your crime number now f-off!" after being kept on hold, explaining yourself 3 times to 3 different people with zero local knowledge is par for the course these days, IME.

This is not to denigrate their front line officers who generally do a superb job of absorbing the sh!ie that's thrown at them from all directions.
I have to concur, following the last (or was it previous) armed robbery that bro suffered. He called the ol' bill, but was asked to "call back when the thieves have gone'

Fortunately, one of his over 60yr old members of staff dealt with it, and she shooo'd them away Nora Batty style.

But they have not got those resources Kevin and the vast majority of speeding offences are issued after cameras have done their work, not traffic officers or even roadside speed traps.  The traffic officers are in desperately short supply
Not round here, there are loads of them.  And if you *really* need one in a hurry, go to the Super Sausage café on the A5 any time of day.

There is a clear issue around efficiency, which always happens when you give a civil service department an influx of cash.  I doubt its the fault of the average plod, but the way their management (mis)manage resources.

These issues haven't arisen since the cuts imposed by Treasonous May. They have been around for at least 20 years.
The cuts don't help of course, but there is an indemic problem within the Police, which seems to indicate they don't se solving old fashioned crimes with real proper law abiding victims, as something they should care about too much.
I had a burglary in 2001.Called the Police, told them who did it and where to find my property they had stolen.
They weren't really interested, but to try and pacify me went and asked the blokes if they had done it. ::)
Came back to me and said "they said it wasn't them".
I asked the copper "did you look to see if my property was where I said it would be?"
"No, that might have caused some upset or anger".
A lot of my respect for the British Bobby disappeared that day.  :(

An senior ex-policeman that I know said that nowadays new recruits join up. find a cushy desk job to do their paperwork and sit back for 30 years until they get their (generous) pension!

If Uncle STEMO had dialled 999 and told the police that he had been mis-gendered, South Yorkshire's finest would have descended on Barnsley on mass!  ;)
