Range zero miles
« on: 22 January 2017, 22:38:27 »

With a range of 16 miles I thought I could just about make it home last night
Got completed distracted as Chichester approached by a very tipsy Swmbo  ::)
Now it`s 12 miles to empty with about 14 miles to go.  I`m sure I can make it home

Turn the ECO button on & cruise along @ about 58 mph still on the A27 heading west.
I could divert to Havant Tesco, it`s gone 1 AM  do they have a card only pump that works?
On a nice flat motorway with hardly any traffic, 2 miles to empty.
Nadgers range is Zero miles & she`s cruising nicely, so I reset the trip.
At zero plus 3 miles we`ve made it back home  :y
Last time I do that, gets the old nerves jangling a bit

Fuel light roulette.

Let's hope you have another vehicle and a petrol can  :D

Many many many moons ago in your neck of the woods, before we had trip computers  ;D .... I drove to Whale Island in my Dad's Cortina and ended up there on fumes ... they didn't have 24hr petrol stations back then. The following day I drove out of Whale Island to the petrol station towards Pompey, ran out of petrol & just coasted onto the petrol station fore court   :y :y

Just think of all that crap you have pulled into the fuel system from the bottom of the tank.
Also think about the pump that has been spinning away in nothing but fuel vapour.
Not worth the risk imho  ;)

But will it start... ;D

Given that you passed the BP at Emsworth services and Havant Tescos and presumably bypassed Farlington, I concur TGs sentiment and will laugh my bollax off if it doesn't start :-X

the bottom of the tank is where the pump ALWAYS sucks from, so if there was crap in there, it would have pulled it through anyway. And as the tank is plastic, where's this crap come from in the first place?  ::)

Swarf and sediment...

from where?  ???

and as said, even if it was in the tank, the fuel pump sucks from the bottom of the tank regardless of how full it is

The fuel itself... it's a percentage thing... if any given tank contains 1mm of crud at the bottom, when full, say 150 mm this is a small part of the tank volume, but if you only have 3mm of fuel, then potentially a third of your fuel is sediment.

Incidentally, if the pick up was ON the bottom of the tank, it would be either suffocated or underneath ::) actually picks up a couple of mm above the base of the tank, specifically to minimise the amount of crud being drawn into the pump.

Next time you're bored, pop the prefilter of your fuel pump... I'll wager that it isn't clean ;)

Also the pump needs fuel around it to lubricate the impellor bering or it melts  ;)

I've never found any of this fabled dirt/sludge/sediment in a tank out of a car in use, and rarely in ones that have been standing for years.

So I have a tenner that says the filter will be clear.

They react quite badly to being run dry, that's for sure

Yup

My car had been running on LPG for about 3 years with the minimum of petrol in the tank.
In tank petrol pump went last summer while working away in Stoke forcing me to force start the car on LPG which had my arse twitching because I couldn't remember if I had ticked the box for shutdown after xxx number of forced starts.

Anyway, I got the thing home and replaced the pump.
The tank had a nice film of brown shit all over the inside of the tank and the pump housing / nylon filter was covered in it.

Needless to say, they is at least a third of a tank of petrol in there from now on  :y

I'm always running out of fuel, and ignoring the diesels, never had any issues once I've done the walk of shame with a petrol can.

My MV6 was reading Range = 0 for about 2 weeks before I couldn't hack it any longer and went to Asda for their top quality fuel...

If fuel range went into minus......i'd wager they'd be reading about -20 miles to go before actually running out of fuel....

No manufacturer is going to make a vehicle that the fuel comp, says 0 miles to go and it does run out.....  :y
