Are there any recommendations for a few hours temporary car insurance for a 20 year old Omega?
It's currently SORN with no MOT, and booked in for a test later this month. I've spent the last couple of years tinkering around with it, new suspension and steering and a whole host of other jobs to get it up to scratch, so it's just about ready to go..... the last thing I want is for it to be impounded by the police and end up with points on my licence, so this 'investment' needs to be covered short term.
I've spent the last couple of hours trying to get a quote online, but end up with 'we've encountered a problem' or the following quote saying it needs a valid MOT certificate if required and is not currently declared as being off-road under the DVLA SORN Regulations
Any suggestions?

Let's break this down...
1. MoT certificate is not 'required' until it passes the test. It should be as roadworthy as possible to take to the test, and this situation is pretty much the only time a car doesn't require a valid certificate.
Being able to legally drive it home after a fail is a moot point, as the level of failure can dictate the car not being driven... Book the test as near home as possible... If it fails, unless you want the garage to carry out the rectification work, they won't want a car the size of the Omega taking up space. Just because you shouldn't drive the car, doesn't affect your right to have it rectified elsewhere ;)
2. You cannot un SORN it without an MoT, Tax and insurance in place. Again taking a car to/from a prebooked MoT Test is about the only legal exemption to thevtax requirement. :y

I used Southern Rock for day insurance when I took the Project Car for the MOT after two years SORN. Greenlight said that LV wouldn't insure it after more than 12 months SORN, Once the MOT was passed it was then insured with Greenlight due to the modifications.

if its purely for the purpose of an mot test then surely the garage would just send someone up with trade plates to fetch it .i know my garage would and not charge but yours may be different ?

I recently googled day car insurance
Looked at the first company that came up. £24
After entering driving licence number, dropped to £21.84
That was for Fraud Mundano to take it for test
Had been SORN for 20 months
Failed the MOT by the way ;D

yes, I agree , the £25 cost for 1 day insurance could be put towards the cost of a garage picking up/dropping off :)
I've used on day insurance to pick cars up before , then spent time checking them over to make sure they would pass an MOT ,then just put regular yearly insurance on once happy ,then take for MOT .

I've found out today there are a lot of insurance companies that won't insure a car unless it has a current MOT and is taxed, so a lot of trawling (and going around in circles) to find one that will.
I've now got it covered with Tempcover, so one less thing to sort out. Thanks for all your feedback. :y

Just for clarification MOT and Vehicle Tax are linked together on the DVLA System but not Insurance, they scrapped that idea years ago when they scrapped the Tax Disk
Àbviously you need Insurance to drive a car, you need an MOT to Tax a Car but that's it, you don't need Insurance to Tax, Un Tax, Re Tax, New Keeper Tax, SORN or Un SORN etc, can all be done without Insurance :y

I use an app called Cuvva which you can insure with for an hour if needed or days, quite handy for picking up/shifting car's
