« on: 10 July 2007, 14:12:52 »

Is my local garage having a laugh quoting me £350 to replace a rear wheel bearing on my mv6 estate? :'(

nope not really because he will dis-asemble the entire unit and pull the bearing and press it out of the hub lot of work with them being rear wheel drive its an awkward job

Ouch!  Ok, thanks for your reply.  Is it worth having both done together?

I had three bearing replaced a few weeks ago - 2x front, 1x rear I WAS going to get all four done - but it took the guy just over 2 hours to do the rear...so we gave that a mutual wide swerve!

Was about £25+VAT for the actual bearing...£80+VAT to get it fitted.

£350 is VERY expensive...try a local independant that you trust.

Not surprised at the price. I had a front bearing advisory on my last MOT which was covered by warranty so gave them the go ahead to change it out. The bearing change consisted of a complete hub unit rather than pulling and replacing the old bearings.

If it is the case with the main dealer as well then the price is probably for a full hub unit.

Sorry to butt in, my motor just failed MOT partly cos of failing rear bearing - local garage just quoted me £110 for replacement including part - i'd call an indipendant then have a beer after its fixed with the £240 you saved  :y

According to TIS 2000 it is 2.6 hours labour for one side. I think Vx charge £80 per hour so with VAT that'd be £244 and £100 'ish for parts.

Thats obscene.  You could employ a barrister for less.

Do they now design bearings to fuse onto the axle on purpose?

Bearings  are £40ish - saloon, £58.50ish estate +Vat retail

Bearings fusing onto the axle?.......they are press fited into the rear hubs so need special tools to aid removal and fitting if done on the car.

Front bearings are part of the hub assembly (about 30-40 quid for the part) and VERY easy to change.

But, Omegas rarely suffer from bearing failures
