General Car Chat / Sat nav Golfmk7 v tom tom
« on: 28 October 2021, 22:06:46 »
Our car sat nav has gone awol. Screen message saying something like data unavailable. A lot irritating as we use it a lot on our jaunts from Spain to UK and back . We are currently in Bordeaux.

A bit of investigating via google suggests that they stop working after 7 updates ( including first use at factory) and or the licence expires after 7 years. I shall go to the local dealer to us back in Spain and no doubt they will fix it for a couple of hundred euros. Strangely, we never had an sd card when we got the car . I believe the card is unique to your car.

Anyone else heard of this “ expiry” concept?

Makes for an expensive sat nav compared to a tomtom which gets free updates for life and costs peanuts. Fortunately we have a tom tom which i updated in Scarborough only a couple of weeks ago. Also plenty of sat nav type apps on mobile phones that are good.

Argh! Can you believe children are playing this sort of games. How long before that is reality ( China already has widespread facial recognition) what sort of humans are we creating.

Olive branches from EU today.

What about the ECJ?

I wonder what Lord Frosts red lines are?

More trouble for the EU.

Poland challenging EU rule of law.

Gas availability and price might be an issue too.

Really enjoyed the quali today.

Great British prospects in Lando and George.

Shame it looks like a dry race but should be interesting nonetheless. It will be interesting to see where Alonso is after the first corner. Then we have bumper car man who will be carving through!

Just reading about CO2 shortage will affect Christmas. Used in food production, ready meals, Bernard Mathew turkeys etc.

The pandemic has upset deliveries, shortage of workers. Shortage of computer chips. Driving up through England I kept seeing gantry signs saying no diesel at services.

Worldwide shortage of containers and container ships but a reluctance to invest in new super ships while climate change movement could render the engines obsolete.

Went to local corner shop and freezer cabinet was nearly empty!

Is all this a portent of the post pandemic future?  Short term problems or with us for next ten years? What do OOFers think?

General Discussion Area / Advice Technics separates
« on: 07 September 2021, 15:27:15 »
Time has come to do something with my Hi Fi.

I have a Technics SUV460 amp. CD with remote, Tuner and double tape deck. They have been packed away for 19 years. Got power leads, connecting cables, manuals even.
We have moved on musicwise and just listen to streamed music on a bluetooth speaker.

Question is; Is there a market for them? We are coming over to England next week with the car. Ebay? Postage would be hefty.

Thank goodness the summer break is over.

Great track but despite liking damp races as real talent shows through, full wet racing isn’t  that clever.

Well done Russell and Vettel.

Bring on the race tomorrow.

Japan tells 1.5 million to evacuate their homes.

What a mammoth task to provide food and shelter. What do you take with you knowing that when you go home it might all be gone.? 37 inches of rain and no sign of it letting up. I experienced only 4 inches of rain in 20 minutes a few years ago. Most unpleasant.

Why would anyone in the UK need a pump action shotgun let alone a licence for one?

Will Russell move up to a winning car?

There was a time when I thought Mercedes would put him in the team alongside Lewis.  I suspect Lewis would be quite happy if they kept Bottas.

Maybe a good move would be to loan Russell to Red Bull to take points off Max! I suspect Perez will keep the second seat though.

Will Mazspins dad buy the team and get rid of Schumacher?

General Discussion Area / Foreign holidays
« on: 20 July 2021, 20:38:03 »
Anyone on here in the UK planning or hoping to take a foreign holiday this year?

Driving to France, flying to Italy, ferry to Spain or what have you. Maybe further afield.

Just interested in what people are hoping to do or indeed got booked Covid permitting.

We are hoping to visit friends and family in England and Scotland and maybe even come back through Ireland and ferry back to Spain in the autumn. Bit concerned about both England and Spain infection rates which are definitely going the wrong way.

I am looking forward to this weekend especially as I will be able to watch live.

Interesting change. Quali today, Sprint race on Saturday.

Will the new format be a success?

Initial look at the 2022 cars is promising in terms of bringing back excitement to the sport especially reducing the wake for a following car.

General Discussion Area / Technology
« on: 12 July 2021, 13:37:29 »
Anyone else feel they are always in a battle against technology? The very same thing that is supposed to make life easier.

Yesterday we failed to get a Samsung Tab to “ cast” to a Samsung smart TV. It has worked before.

Trying to swap icloud suppliers for backups

Failed to bluetooth Radio  from an iphone to car radio today. Normally works well. Radio shows track  but no sound.

The list is endless. I am trying to get Nord VPN working to “ watch” UK TV. Easy on a compatible router. Not so easy on devices. Tech is supposed to be intuitive.

I cant wait for autonomous cars declaring “ sorry can’t go now as doing an update and didnt recognise your fingerprint”.

Rant over.
