Just found out my current insurance Co. (General accident) don't cover cars over 20yrs old so although covered for my 99 elite they won't let me change to my 97 tourer  and they want to charge me £50 for the privilege of cancelling. Yes it does say about the 20 Yr thing in the usual small print but what would they have done on 1st August this year when the elite becomes more than 20 years old.

Zenith were a bit funny about not insuring an older vehicle than currently covered, but seem to have relaxed it as they are currently providing reasonable quotes for pre '98

They won't quote if you have less than a years' no claims

I would think[although I'm no expert in such matters]that as your 99 car is already insured with them then when it turns twenty in August they'd have to honour the contract until its expiry and then simply decline to re-insure it.Most insurance companies charge a fee for change of vehicle part way through the insured period so the £50 fee they're talking of for cancelling the policy altogether you'd probably have been charged[at least in part]to swap it to your tourer?

If they have already taken your premium, then they've entered into a contract, so it's there mistake.
So if they took your money, then decided they don't won't to insure it, they should refund you the full premium...

I'm not reading it that way. The way I read it:

annihilator insured Car A (19 years old) with them and paid them (say) £500.
Car B is 20+ years old. Half way through his policy he phones up and says "I need to change from Car A to Car B" and they say "Sorry we don't cover cars over 20 years old, we can refund you less £50 admin charge [or you can keep insuring Car A, no charge]"

Common practice, I'm afraid. The (admin) cost of changing a policy mid term is usually stated on the schedule.
