rear wheel bearing ..... I think
« on: 25 July 2016, 13:50:50 »

OK, so had new trackrods and drop links done, all went well, but now there is a bearing going at the rear, its really PI***** me off now, so it has to be done. It will be a garage job, as there Is no way I am capable with my health, and thats not an option. can anyone supply a link to recommended new one, and if its a pattern part, its ok, as am sure the bits that the garage fitted last month were not genuine  parts, as its sas, andrew page and europarts they use. Also a "ball park" fitting figure for said work, did not want to pay daft money, as cars not worth it lol

Thanks in advance :y

Last time I looked, a decent branded(SKF I think) bearing was about £40 from Eurocarparts; my car has a cheaper one fitted.

This isn't a difficult job but many people, including garages, make it so. A bill for 2hours work would be reasonable, much more than that is taking the piss. Some easily improvised tooling makes the job much easier, which something traditional mechanics just handle, many modern technicians seem to struggle.

When mine was done by a fellow OOFer down in Trowbridge it was 40 minutes from start to finish ... he did have some very "interesting" home made tools just for the job... :)  that 40 minutes did include 5-6 minutes making up a piece on a lathe that he couldn't find in his box .... very impressive. 'Tis a real shame he no longer frequents the forum, he was a major asset and a REALLY nice bloke as well.

I would sooner travel 2 hrs away to get a job done properly than go round the corner and get a bodge job  :y

It's not rocket science. Any capable mechanic should be able to do it in a couple of hours.

I've done three in the street!

You'll need ordinary hand tools, including Allen and Torx bits.

There are three mildly tricky aspects:

Undoing the hub nut: it's tightened to 300Nm and is under the car.
Extracting the hub from the bearing:the worst part of the job, I made a tool that bolts on the brake backplate and pushes the hub out

Refitting the hub: I pull it through the bearing using the hub nut with a couple of spacers as packers.

Removing the bearing is easy with normal FWD type bearing tools:

as an update to this, took car to a very competent garage, they did my MOT etc, and a grease monkey had it up on the ramps, and seemed to be making a "mountain out of a molehill", the resulting  figure for this work was £234.90, will be glad to see the breakdown of charges >:(
