as an update to this, took car to a very competent garage, they did my MOT etc, and a grease monkey had it up on the ramps, and seemed to be making a "mountain out of a molehill", the resulting  figure for this work was £234.90, will be glad to see the breakdown of charges >:(

For a £50 part(retail price remember) and a couple of hours work that doesn't seem unreasonable to me.

Well £30 be for the bearing. Assume they fitted the correct one, as saloon and estate are different.

The unbranded one I fitted to my Estate 3(4?) years ago was £20 with a trade discount, but no garage is going to pass that price onto a customer.

5 Series ones are £40-80 each... But that includes a new hub nut (fitted from outside) and the four bolts that hold the bearing on... ;D

ok, so had it done, what a cock up, first they billed me for extra hours, which I suppose may be fair enough, mine must have been a right barsteward, as when putting it all back, it was attacked with a hammer, and copious amounts of strength from 3 different people, trying to get a ball joint back in, the result was....... a broken ball joint, and car was kept in for another day, as it was fri @3pm, and they could not get one until sat morning.... £371 incl VAT, they dit NOT charge for the ball joint, just extra (again) labour  :'(

and was going to get them to do a service and cam belt next month £1000 probably and something will go wrong, think I will get a push bike ;D

You need to find a better garage.

I've done three wheel bearings, in the street, in about two hours(each)without ever using a hammer or undoing the balljoint. You should be aware that you car should have an alignment check as they will have altered the rear camber and toe settings.

This is not a difficult job, despite Vauxhall's efforts to make it so.

Find another garage. Even if you ignore the fact that they have made an awkward job seem near impossible they then charged you labour to replace something they broke? :o :o ::) ::)

I am going to get alignment done next week. It drives fine now, beeter than before, obviously, BUT was coming back from Durham last night on th A1M, and gradually increased speed on a deserted motorway, vibrations started at 88, and backed of at a ton 10 ;D

Hitting a bearing in with a hammer is never a good idea as it can damage the internals of the bearing. Keep your receipt some where safe just incase it fails in the near future.
