More awful MPGs

My 2.0 16v, I have calculated is averaging 21MPG with combined town / a road driving. I know they're not the most economical, but this seems excessive.

I've cleaned out throttle body, all breathers are cleaned out, new plugs, fuel, air and oil filters done.

Any ideas welcome...

Only two things I can think of but you would get an error are

The air intake temp sensor and the lambda

Foot, lead, springs to mind. ;D

My 2.2 averages 25 around town, fitted with auto box.
 Long journey, Scotland to Devon, averages 36 -38.

I have tried slip streaming old ladies on zimmer frames and the variety of British Racing Green Tractors that we have in my neck of the woods.

Could just need a good old fashioned service. :)

Something not right there for an average!! Driving to Nottingham in the Senny at very high speed, including several runs to high 3 figures, on the private runway... it averaged 26mpg...

My 2.2 did 35mpg average on the way back to Uni on Sunday (cruise set @ 80)

Getting any error codes?

Tyre pressure?

Problem like on the old car, leaking tank? Fuel leak maybe?

Having said that we had it running in my garage for ages, no obvious smell of petrol  :-/

Mine used to get 22 commuting with a heavy right foot.

Over 30 on a moderate run, high 20s at 80mph, and running on Shell it used to get 20mpg towing on the Somerset levels! (but 16 in Devon Cornwall)

On the 2.6 gauge says 14.xmpg filling up says over 16mpg. More economical towing on motorway than commuting!!!! So check at the pump not the MID

I need to richen it a bit I think to get the emmisions light out.

Oh stuff it they sound nice over 5000rpm

Anyway so your tyres pressures are OK, brakes OK, serviced, leads OK? driving OVER 50mph?

For economy keep it at mid to high 50s avoid acceleration and braking, and polish it!

Try Shell petrol as well, also run some injector cleaner through

You could do the axle and gearbox oils?

Manual then id say its definately thirsty.....

My 2.2 averages 20ish on lpg......and i boot mine most of the time.....i have too....its a bit lacking on power.

My checks are based on calculations at the pump, rather than the MID.

Can't always keep over 50 in the town  ;D but otherwise yes!

If no DTC's then it may be coolant sensor problem, staying in warm-up enrichment.  Dunno about 4cyls, but different sensors for ECU and dash on V6.

My Missus has got my Omega's average down to 23 mpg commuting for an average of 30 minutes over 6 miles each way to work!
(2.5 manual)

Seems very excessive for a 2.0 James. I normally get between 25-27 mpg urban/town and 31-32 mpg on motorway/long run from my 2.5 V6 estate, although it is manual.

Airfilter was renewed when I got the car a couple of weeks ago

As far as getting up to temp goes, it's hard to tell, because the temp gauge only works when it feels like it  ;D

I wonder if the wrong washers have been used on coolant bridge, causing bad earth....  ....iirc, the ecu is too old so cannot tech2 it...

You are right about the ECU

Interestingly, I filled it to the top again last night, still on Tesco99. I since did a run home, about 7 miles in heavy stop/start traffic, and 65 miles on the Motorway between 70-80mph..  

When I got back to Gloucs I filled up with Tesco99 again, and it cost me exactly £7.70 to do 72.2 miles, which is 37.7mpg.. (MID said 38.5).. these are closer to the figures I would expect....

Weird!!!

I wonder if you got a dose of the contaminated fuel as well? Didn't make such a dramatic difference to fuel consumption on my car but on a different engine management system it might have. In fact, as yours didn't throw up a fault light maybe it indicates that the limits are wider and it carried on winding the correction up rather than going back to base values and barfing a fault code?

Guess we'll never know.

Apart from not going that slow I rarely got over 40 instant on mine except on overrun.

The 2.0s aren't THAT economical. BEtter than V6s but not hugely better

For the record I generally get over 500 miles on my 2.0 before the light comes on - mixed driving.
Think that's c. 35mpg

My 2.5 long term average (because I haven't reset the computer) is 30.0 exactly.

i seem to be getting around 32 on my daily commute now, it was doing around 27/28 until i noticed the tracking was out ( the steering was VERY light - like torque steer on a front wheel drive car)

its an auto. just got over a overheating problem - valve stuck open on the cap ,  so the system wasn't pressurising, so the  mileage average could be higher (can hope cant i ?)
was thinking about a chip, but the cost is putting me off at the moment, have noticed superchips wanting £511 fitted! this is money i would rather ( no offence ment) be spending on the other car.
but then again .........  ::)
