Sound advice needed - Aftermarket HU & VX speakers
« on: 19 June 2010, 16:02:05 »

After several months driving around with a CCR2006 and BOSE amp and speakers I finally got around to taking them out and fitting my Blaupunkt headunit.

I removed the BOSE amp and 6 speakers and fitted 4 standard 4 Ohm speakers from an Omega being broken by a forum member.

On the plus side I now have a load more space in the boot and can play MP3s and CDRs and receive DAB radio.

My problem is that if I turn the volume up now I seem to have lost the punch that came through having the BOSE amp and speakers.

My headunit is a DAB53 with a claimed output of 4x25w sine to DIN 45 324 (or 4x45w max power).

What I want to know is whether I can gain a significant improvement by changing the speakers? or maybe my headunit is the limiting factor :-/

headunit does sound a bit weak, did you add speakers to the gaps in the parcel shelf?

Quite a few people have amp'd there standard speakers, and had good results from it.

At the moment I have two large holes on the metal rear shelf where the woofers used to be (hidden under the Bose speaker grilles).

I seem to recall someone (probably TheBoy but might have been DaveDND) saying that the standard speakers were only good for 8 watts. I didn't think I was likely to wind the volume up enough to notice TBH but maybe I do ::)

Manufacturers figures for amplifier output are often unreliable. If my headunit is capable of turning out 4x25 watts (total 100 watts) of 'quality' sound then I think I will be well chuffed :y

Change the speakers before they blow !! and the results will be significant !!

The original speakers have about an 8 Watt rating - thats not what you can put through them, its what they will fail at. So your head 25 Watt per channel head unit is over loading the speakers when at less that 1/4 of its volume. If the speakers fail as a result of being overloaded, chances are the head unit will as well soon after.

Check out my website for the Clarion speakers I have, as they seem to be exceptionally popular at the moment without breaking the bank.

Thanks Dave

It looks as though I may be able to use the Clarion speakers with my existing adapter rings.

I will try and find an excuse to make a work visit to Torbay (with detour to Paignton) as soon as possible.

Finally found an excuse to visit Torbay for work tomorrow.

Assuming that Dave DND is open to passing trade I'm hoping to buy some of his Clarion speakers.

Has anyone tried using the Bose adapter rings with aftermarket speakers?

I find that I can save quite a bit in tyre wear that way

 ;D

Only stumbling block I have is trying to hide the radiator - didn`t really want it at the back

Was the Scooby hunt successful?

Unfortunately I had to get back to the office in the afternoon.  :( Hopefully I won't have to wait too long for another excuse to visit Torbay for work. :y

Next time your coming over to Torbay, let me know, as would be good to put a face to the name, and I`ll make sure the kettle is on

Yes, Scooby hunt was successfull - pulled the engine out of the guys Baja Bug when I got there, so I could see how it all went together - Love those cars, took less than 10 minutes to remove it !! - came home with a Scooby engine, VW gearbox adaptor plates and a BMW M3 radiator - might take a while to get it in the Buggy though, need to work out how to alter the depth of the sump for ground clearance as its abit lower than the bug engine - still plenty of clearance on the road, but could be a problem down some of the green lanes
