What to look f on an Oldish Vectra
« on: 23 June 2009, 13:37:55 »

My nipper is looking at buying an oldish Vectra either a 1.6 or 1.8, now he doesn't want to spend a great deal on it (£500 tops) so its going to be an oldish one for that money, don't know much about Vectras so apart from the Norm Cambelt, Service History etc what do I need to be looking out for so we can eliminate the duff ones?????cheers in advance.

Earlier Veccies will have the X18XE (1.8) and X20XE (2.0).  All easy to work on , just ensure breathers are clean so on....

I personally rate the Z16XE and moreso Z18XE engines quite highly.... found in later Veccy's I think

Also look for rust on the C pillar where the door striker plate attaches. Had this done twice under warranty on the wife's 97 Vectra of a few years ago.

1.6 is a bit strained on the veccy-b, 1.8 is ok.  Obviously if he's young and needs 1.6 for insurance reasons, that sets the requirements.

Personally not worked on many, seem (in my limited experience) to eat up cam sensors like 2.2 Omegas.  Also, not sure why, they always seem to have dirty engines!

Check out some of the special editions, there are SO many about that you nedent get the poverty spec models (engine aside). Have you considered the very late Cav's? Even the GLS were trimmed REALLY nicely with Omega ELite Velour and had 14 inch alloys, air con etc... Probably built better than an early Veccy too (first off the production line scenario!). The Cav 1.8 8v was a fantastic engine with LOADS of torque and will be a much nicer drive than some 16v's.
