Contrary to expectations - it is raining in Wakefield!!! Reminds me of those immortal words uttered by Noah when the first drop of rain fell on him aboard the ark and he looked to the sky and said " I think its in for't day Florrie"

Cruises . . . .

I know people who go on cruises. Regardless of Covid19, I would not want to spend time locked inside a tin can with them or people like them.
They don't appeal to me, but I keep promising some friends we will do a cruise.  Who knows I might like it.  But not with the current sniffle thing going around - for decades we've seen how less serious infections spread like wildfire on cruise ships.

The only 2 "cruises" I've ever been on was a Fred Olson one to Norway (quite enjoyable as a randy teenager  :-X), and one of those Nile cruises which was a great experience for the 4 days I wasn't confined to by bathroom.. Well, even the days I was confined to the bathroom was an experience I will never forget, no matter how much I want to.

I have actually been on one cruise which I really enjoyed. Overnight from Cyprus to Israel. Spent the day touring the sights - Jerusalem, Bethlehem etc. Then back to the boat, nice food and a bit of entertainment, and overnight to Egypt. Did the Pyramids and Sphincter at Giza, then the Cairo museum. Back to the boat more food etc. and overnight back to Cyprus.
Approx. £100 for a family of four around 20 years ago.

I felt queasy on a sight seeing cruise on the river Ouse in York :D so a proper full on cruise would be my idea of hell on earth[or should that be hell on water?]

According to my ex Navy Grandfather, you're only allowed to be seasick in two places...

Going round Cape Horn and crossing the Pentland Firth...

Can't speak for Cape Horn, but there are whirlpools on the Pentland Firth  :D

A calm December day passing Swona and Stroma

I do recall a Channel crossing on a Seacat - this was the time when I'd had an "interesting" 24hrs, having broken down, taken to a village in the arse end of nowhere, delays in a taxi to get me to Dijon, destroying a hire car by hitting a raven at 200kph, and missing the ferry - which was really, really rough.  I wasn't too bad, until I saw other people chundering over the side and watching it splatter onto the life rafts.  I had to go back inside, or else I would have had to join them ;D

Strangely, one can also meet some very nice people on cruises, perhaps it is like life, you get all sorts. ::)

First time they used a Seacat on the Weymouth/Guernsey was such a poor crossing, one passenger suffered a heart attack and half the crew resigned ;D

Dad was in the navy on minesweepers during WW2-he was in a reserved occupation so didn't have to go but volunteered anyway-and always wanted me to join the navy[probably to get rid of me for long periods :D] but boats/ships are the one form of transport I just cannot take so i didn't try to enlist.

I'm sure, and no offence intended.

It's just that I know a particular group of people who all go on cruises, who are boring as hell and seem to spend all of their time comparing cruises they've been on and will be going on. There seems to be some kind of one-upmanship game going on. I would not want to be locked on a boat with them with no escape. It's bad enough on any holiday when people try to "be friends" wanting to meet up when you get back, at least on land you can avoid them  ::)   :y

All I would say is, having felt that cruising was not for us before trying a short one from Vancouver to Alaska in the '80's, don't knock it until you've tried it. We now like the smaller luxury ships of up to about 900 pax, and which take us to places we would not normally visit, particularly around Europe. Then if we find somewhere we particularly like, we may return there for a short break. It has worked very well for us over the last 30 years. :y
