Tomorrow's my birthday.....
« on: 25 October 2016, 20:08:17 »

...... and I have some interesting car bits on order  :D

Nice stubby spanner set and a few more tool items I've forgotten about.

The most interesting though.....

An oil analysis kit from me ma and pa (well, I will have to physically buy it myself  ::))

Anyway I've wanted one for ages. I remember a discussion in my 0-60 thread where a few of us thought that a 16 year old omega could have power sapping engine wear. Others thought that they wouldn't have wear at all assuming regular oil changes adhered to.

Compression tests so far seem to show there's no compression loss. However doing my cam cover gaskets in the garage one of the lads commented that my cams were f****d  ;D. That was a bit excessive in my opinion but they were definitely scored and lobes seem to have wear.

No idea what the results will be. Will post up results when I get the report. Can't wait  :)

Are you cutting open the filter and examining what you(don't) find inside? How many tests will your kit provide, as you need a few to get a picture of what's happening to the oil.

I bet you find that if your changing the oil within the interval, there's absolutely nothing to worry about.

No mate. Dropping the oil and sending a sample to the oil lab! For around 40 notes they test the sample and find microscopic particles of various metals. They then give a breakdown of what the particles have likely come from and thus a good wear-barometer.

As said I don't know what they'll find. That's the fun  :)

Just to add...

My intrigue has always been my engine in comparison with a box fresh omega engine. My own personal feeling is that even minute wear in engine components like cams, lifters, bearings etc add up to a drop in performance over all those years.

That being why some people reckon cars lose approx 5 horses a year.  :)

ahh .. the good old SOAP tests .. takes me back a few years collecting samples for those, eventually the RAF stopped wasting spending money on them because they proved nothing, if oil changes done on time..  :)

They tried, selling these around the road haulage industry few years back, they were, being offered by shell and BP, the big boys like Tesco and bower(McDonalds) tried it, The out come, changed to fully synthetic and extended service intervals, oil was found to being under-used and could still carry on for more km's.

I think I can understand what you mean.....

To get a true gauge of wear you'd have to check the oil from day one to 16 years later for example. However if that was the case the engine would be worn cos the oil hadn't been changed.  ;D

I suppose on the other hand though, it will be interesting to see if there's any wear metals in the oil

Oil in aircraft engines is changed very frequently .. measured in flight hours not miles travelled. We used to have to take SOAP samples every 50 hours and change the magnetic chip detectors - 3 per engine - (basically a bolt with a magnet on the end that screwed into an oilway), place them in protective cardboard sleeves along with the little bottle of oil and return them to base at the end of a trip. On a Far East rotation we might fly some 250 hours, so we'd get back with a whole pile of boxes to be sent away for analysis, by the time the results came back the oil had all been changed anyway !!

Right got ya nige. But at least it would show abnormal wear though right? Thus a good indication of what part was likely needing replacement (albeit that safety being more paramount 50k feet up lol

We were still doing it on Tristars in the early '90's, but I suspect it has been superseded by modern technology. :y

Now that's a classic car.. assuming you meant car not aircraft.  Which begs a question I've meant to ask for ages - what do you do for a living, Nick?

Nope, an aircraft that was in for an annual inspection.

What do I do?  Nothing since October '15 because 12years of vehicle recovery was making me ill. For the last 3 weeks I've been helping out where a friend works on light aircraft. I've been reassembling an acrobatic monoplane this week, which is a case of in at the deepend. Me, not the plane that is :o

It's all relative bro; some would argue spending time on a forum that celebrates slow old not so desirable cars was a waste of time. But hey some folk are always right 😂

I certainly ain't your bro, if I was,  I'd happily test your oil by drinking it.

In a kind enough way, you are a master of self infliction with the questions you ask.

I like omegas, hence owning one thanks, it's purely banter, which is expected on all forums.

Happy birthday all the same, maybe next year you might want to invest in a strait jacket and visit your local health authorities padded room.

Sorry Doctor.

As for posts I use this forum for my own benefit, don't see the point in how many posts I have over however many years.  I don't live on here, it's rediculous how many posts you need to sell something.  I've in fact been on here longer than you, under my previous profile, before the website changed its host address from the old website.  Anyway who's counting?

I've had banter with 'the bear' before and gave him advice.  I'd hate this to turn into cyber bullying.

I'll leave the playground now and head home for my dinner.

Adios

Not fuelling any fires, but as far as I know, the host address has never changed.  In fact its been www.omegaowners.com since it was created on 8th July 2006 :)

Granted, in the early years before I managed to take control of the domain, it frequently sold watches around its anniversary ;D

Oh yeah, and a couple of weeks after launching, our web host took us down for generating too much traffic, bless them ;D

But even that was only for a few hours before it was bodged temporarily* onto another server...
