What pair of cars, if you were a bit richer
« on: 26 October 2016, 18:04:10 »

Any single car is a compromise IMHO, so if you could afford, say, a pair of £20k 2nd hand motors, what would it be?

I'd go something exec, and possible a 2 seater or nice coupe for more sporty fun.

No idea what though!  The exec saloon would probably have to run on lorry fuel though :(

Probably a Monaro type thing, preferably with LPG, then a second really small run around, but may have to be Estate or even a half decent Van.  :-\

Pity you have restricted my spending, because although not practical, I would LOVE a 4.5 litre supercharged Bently for posh - in BRG, of course!  8)
Then, with my sensible head on, the bestest Omega estate that I could find, with ALL of the work done on it and onmly the driving left for me to do..... :y

I was thinking a diesel XJ can be had for under £20k, and looks a comfortable place to crunch miles, but not been in a new style one.

I'm still stuck on the 2nd car. I think I'd want a roof though.

Just thinking about that blown Bently...
No need for ANPR cameras; after all, how many are there around now?
On the plus side, no peaked cap with even the vestige of a soul would contemplate putting a ticket on it - he would be too busy drooling over it!

With a 20k budget, first up would be a Shadow then if enough change left a Super Snipe or Imperial.

Having just come out of a 2.7 diesel S-Type I can confirm the engine is superb and is a great motorway muncher.

My choice would be a mid noughties XJ-R as choice 1 and possibly a Mitsubishi GTO as second choice - I'd get both for less than £20k so I'd spend the other £20k on wine women and song  ;D

Odd choice maybe, but I'd go with a Daimler 240 (love a Mk2 but the 20k wouldn't stretch) then an L322 Range Rover with the change.

Then I'll have another £20k a year to keep them on the road, thanks!  ;D

My table tennis playing chum Chris Lowry swears by his cars: a Honda Accord estate, a Honda S1000 sports car, and a 1930 Austin 7 Swallow. I tell him I do not envy him a bit, my assortment of Omega saloons and estates keeps my family mobile  travelling in luxury at a tenth of the cost of his fleet. Mike Smith, another rich chum, has a Range Rover and a Bentley. His neighbour, whose garden I explored when I could not find Mike's house, contained an Aston Martin, a Porsche, and a Range Rover. It's probably sour grapes, but I prefer my Omegas to all of them!

Also, Al, why did you have to find that M5 Tourer? I looked at those when I still had the Omega but prices were out of reach at the time.. Would love one.

I already have one of my choices with the 370z, good mile muncher, handles well and quick enough to get you in to bother, and for 20k I couldn`t find anything else I would spend my money on.

Second choice is more of a problem, with LC, Audi ur-Quattro and 993 variety 911 all being considerably more than the 20k budget  :'(

I'm fairly happy with my incredibly dull Volvo XC70, so just a newer one or maybe a Merc E320 Est. And  . . .

A restored Truimph TR4, 5 or 6. TR5 out of choice, but not fussy.

I like a challenge...

http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201608237061821?sort=price-desc&model=M5&make=BMW&body-type=Estate&fuel-type=Petrol&radius=1500&postcode=rh37ef&advertising-location=at_cars&onesearchad=Used&onesearchad=Nearly%20New&onesearchad=New&page=1
The M5 is the only beemer I'd consider, and fortunately not too pig ugly at the age £20k might buy for a decentish one.

But would have to be a saloon, as estates are bringing in that compromise again.

Can't see a compromise with it... No different to an estate VXR8... ie, everything you could need from a car with a fixed roof ;)

No chance, he only bought his estate because he couldn't bring himself to buy a van :D although it might be argued that he has both his perfect cars...

Interesting TB, I've been contemplating this myself recently and I think I now have my final wish list. I have always loved Range Rovers and although not as practical as my Volvo XC90, it'll do very nicely thank you now the kids have grown up - early TDV8 or 4.4 Supercharged  :D
Then onto the 2nd one at a time of life when if you haven't already, a V8 saloon to replace the Omega when the time comes  :-[ (I had thought about the Volvo S80 V8 - but not as exclusive). I looked at a 55 plate Maserati Quattroporte this week - the search is over  :-*, I have to have one of these in my life - it was gorgeous and not as expensive to run as you might think  ???. OK fuel consumption is never going to be it's vote winner   :o - but who cares
Now it's just a question of timing and SWMBO to figure out  :-\

I came perilously close to buying one of those 6 months ago, but it was sold just before I went to view it so I went to take a look at what is now my Omega.
Half of me is very glad that I didn't end up with the 750, as it would be utter madness to run something like that. The other half is still heartbroken that I didn't get to own such a magnificent car.  ;D

I do have this irrational urge to get a Range Rover (again, practicalities of a 140m round trip commute means its likely to be a soot chucker), thinking it could be a comfortable mile cruncher (perhaps? Not driven one for long enough) and a more practical car than the Battlebus, thus replacing 2 of my existing cars....

To be honest I have been looking for long time at an e39 530, 540 and e38 730 and 740. Merc equivalents are not in the same league.

They would have to be gas converted for sure

As new as I could get basically!  :y

The latest Range Rover Sport isn't that practical as the back seats don't fold flat. ::)  My mate had one and last year we went camping.  2 blokes, beer, camping kit, more beer, couple of boogie boards, few more beers and a dog was a tight squeeze!  :(

Lovely car to drive mind!  :y

Anyone particular year?
I like the p35 myself
The oldest I'd go is the first facelift of the L322 (about 2005).  However, as I need a soot chucker, that puts me at about 2007 as the earliest, as the BMW diesels fitted were hopelessly underpowered (and thirsty).

I would still keep Phaeton or go for A8 LWB but at some stage I would like to change the Astra for a VW Transporter T28 to take families up to see their great grandparents and days out. At present needs two cars to go everywhere or one or more adults stays behind. Unfortunately Astra is still best car for running around and leaving at station. As my board wants me to carry on working for a few more years beyond retirement this is going to need thinking about as need to have sufficient days free to make use of T28. They are very pricey but for 320k would get a 2014.

It would be a shame to have to ban you on your return, so best not mention the garage :P ;D

I'm really struggling with the main car, While I like the exterior styling of the various Jag's I'm not overly struck with the interior as it reminds me of the mid 80's when all electrical goods went from black to tacky silver (nb. how most electrical goods are now black again!). The other thought is a 5 series but the only shape I like is the E60 meaning it would have to be a late one to be a worthwhile replacement (in terms of youth) from the Omega.

The second car is slightly easier, Triumph Stag, Rover SD1 Vitesse (with some suitable 'upgrades') or if in budget a Lotus Carlton (without rust!)

Saw a beautiful red 'S' reg Stag (1977/78) yesterday. Complete with factory fitted hardtop.

It looked great and sounded even better. No idea if it was fitted with the original 3 litre V8 or Rover 3.5 V8.

There's not much sh#t on that one. Don't think it's genuine. ;)
