Hello all. I went out earlier to start the car and nothing not even a splutter it just cranks over without any intention of starting yet started fine yesterday. also I don't know whether its anything to do with it but when it does run it seems to be fine when you're not gunning it but utterly useless when trying to overtake anything and theres this hissing noise when you floor it.. i'm lost again so any pointers as to whats wrong with the heap will be appreciated.

Everyone is going to answer now with many siggestions so il start the ball rolling !. The hissing could be an air leak so id check first that the idle air unit on the passenger side of the plenum hasnt slipped out of its holder ,unlikely but possible. Then check front two big plastic concertina pipes are not split.and check any other genral air hoses,servo hose connection both ends .

Fuel level? Ground level?

There's about four or five gallons in it. and its on a sloping driveway around two foot from level with the front facing uphill.

Level the car and try again. If it starts, immediately go and put more fuel in. If it doesn't start add at least two more gallons and repeat :y

Done it and not a peep from it. and i don't know how loud the fuel pump is normally but I cant hear it buzz when the ignition is switched on. would that suggest the crank sensor perhaps?.

If i remember correctly the fuel pump on the v6 wont start until the engine is cranking.

Crank it over for ten seconds, and use the test port in the fuel rail to check for both pressure and fuel. Repeat the test. If it works both times, your pump is probably OK, and you need to do some more sophisticated diagnosis.

Well after cranking the engine and loosening the fuel pipe practically nothing more than a dribble came out does that mean the pump is knackered?. if so they are fairly cheap going by the search I've done online so other than the fiddle to get it all out of the tank and back in I don't see there being too much of hassle with it all.

Another quick question, when I crank the engine over should I have 12v at the plug to the sender unit wires blue/red and brown.

I did what I should have done in the beginning and swapped the crank sensor for the second hand one that came with the 3.2 and it started without a fuss. unlike the owner..

The fuel level question is always a valid starting point, especially on the estates they are sensitive if left on a slope. Once that is ruled out, fuel pump and crank sensors are the next two items...
Incidentally repeatedly trying and failing to start does invariably result in a dead crank sensor, ime.
