Oil change 1 done 1 to go?
« on: 15 April 2012, 17:12:53 »

Hi guys as my trusted mechanic has now retiredI sought advice on here about changing the oil & filter on the 2.2 as it looked nice & easy to get to, bought the filter tool as advised & hey presto took me about 20 minutes to complete, the 2.6 has always gone back to the supplying main dealer as I had a warranty on it and to be honest they seemed to be very good ,but I really would like to do  the simple jobs myself now the warranty is over, I know the 2.6 has a different type of filter but I would like to give it a go any advice again much appreciated.

2,6 will most likely have the canister with a lid-type of filter, 24mm wrench to open it and T45 to open the sump plug, instructions are here somewhere... WHAT??? We do not have a how-to for a V6 oil change or am I blind  ???

There is one but it's not listed in the guide for some reason  :-\
If you use the search you'll find it.
If not, post back up and I'll try to get the link ...... cue RobG ........  ;D

Paper filter takes a 24mm (?) socket on the end of the canister

Just hope that a previous owner hasn't over tightened it!   Otherwise the whole casing will turn.
This happened to me and I had to buy one of those metal straps to hold the case still while I opened the cap.  Then tighten the allen bolt inside the housing so it's not spinning anymore and then when re-fitting the cap, only to 15nm!

Strange can't understand it?
There must be quite a few Miggy's around with a unwanted lump of filter alloy casting within the engine
As on mine the base of the canister had a lug/dog or whatever in the casting shape to locate and lock the cannister in a slot in the engine and fix it's position
For the canister to spin round this lug has to fracture off and possibly remains within the engine if not removed  :'( :'(
Luckily I managed to retrieve all the bits
I didn't consider re-useing the filter canister and still have it
Instead I did the "Spin On" conversion
Thought I'd do this post as a caution
So my tip is do not allow the canister to spin
Restrain it by other means when removeing the lid :y :y
Best to know the devil your dealing with if that lid is locked up :'( :'(

I think Tilbo referred to 2,2 arrangement where the filter is in upright position and therefore alot easier/cleaner to replace, you won't have oil running down your sleeves etc.

For the record, there are two types of canisters: old one, which will spin like crazy if lid is stuck and the "new" version which has a lug that locks it to engine block to prevent spinning. So, if you would have the new type in your car it does not matter if some monkey has torqued the lid up to 70 Nm, you can still open it  :y

Yes and fracture off the fixing lug/dog in the process as I did :o :o :'(

Strange thing is:-
I was the the "monkey"  ;D ;D
Who previously replaced the lid!!!
At the time  I was very aware of the problem of lids locking up
The lid was screwed back up with new oiled sealing ring until lid flange contact
Then a gentle nip up in view of my fear of lid lock up on next oil change which dispite my care did happen
When I eventually got the lid off by drilling the canister and inserting a tommy bar to prevent it turning
My conclusion was  that the replacement rubber sealing ring was possibly made of the wrong rubber compound
And adopted either adhesive qualities or expanded itself within the housing
Hence the "Spin On" conversion :y :y

Thanks for all the replies , sounds like if I attempt this one knowing my luck could open "a whole can of worms" I think I will leave it to the supplying dealer, I have a decent relationship with them & it has always been looked after by them.
