engine stutter
« on: 17 August 2010, 11:47:26 »

Hi, having misfire problems with my 2.5 V6 ........... can anybody help before we try taking it on holiday to France!
Originally had misfire once engine was warm, replaced DIS - better, replaced Air mass meter - much better and runs well most of time except when on motorway when, as I try to accelerate the engine seems to stutter, almost as if TC is kicking in or as if gearbox can't make up it's mind about changing up - stutter is accompanied with some vibration, idle then becomes a bit lumpy. Once cool and back on local lanes she runs like dream. Local garage can find no fault codes and have had it on diagnostic machine without result. Plugs recently replaced.
Any suggestions? my next move is to fit new leads but thought I would look for collective wisdom of forum before throwing any more money at car.

Sounds like a lead breaking down.

seconded particularly if the car is on its original set. .

Have a look under the bonnet with the engine running in the dark and see if there is any arcing going on. Might be hard to do at 50 miles per hour ;D

I had the same problem a few years back at circa 120k miles and new leads solved the problem. Fiddly to fit  but not difficult

I would go for a lead. I had similar issue and changed the usual bits and it was only by chance that I spotted the blue spark on the rubber joint at the dis pack end of one of the leads, was a bit darker under the scuttle  :y

Thank you everyone, unanimous then! I'll order a new set of leads and see if I can get my ex large hands over the back of the induction manifold to fit them - any tips?

If you did the dis pack then leads should be no problem. I left my dis pack nice and loose so I can just lift it out to do the leads next time  :y

I'll buy the plasters - I paid to have the DIS changed, seemed like a worthwhile cost.
