Chris... give me some pointers on exactly how you did it..... I want to do the same with my Elite Alloys - they have rust patches
I'm pretty handy with a spray can..
Hi James, here you go mate:
1.) Clean the wheel inside and out thouroughly removing as much hardened brake dust as possible
2.) Depending on how bad your wheels are, either use some coarse emery cloth or a dremel with a grinding bit on it (go easy with this, you can cut into the alloy if not careful) and get all the remaining black crap and rust off. Incidentally I didn't go near the front of the wheel with the grinder or emery cloth. I used wet and dry paper and lots of it!
3.) When all surfaces are looking clean, and probably quite matted by now, give it another good wash and dry.
4.) Use a good metal primer - I only gave it one coat of this.
.... a few hours later
5.) Using alloy wheel spray paint (some are more silver than others, the halfords stuff is what I used and is darker, but they also do a lighter one that they'd run out of) give it a light coat.
.... 15 mins
6.) Second coat filling in all the bits you missed on the light coat.
.... 15 mins
7.) Third coat giving it nice coverage, but not going mental to avoid runs.
.... 24 hours later
8.) Apply a light coat of clear laquer
.... 15 mins
9.) A nice good coverage second coat
.... 15 mins
10.) Third coat
(Optional) .... 15 mins then fourth coat. I did four where I'd been too sparse on the the third.
I also did my centre caps, I pulled the black rubbish off each one, sanded down using wet and dry, then sprayed them as above. Finally applying the new raised chrome vauxhall badges to each one that I got off ebay.
You need to leave that for about a week at the minimum to go properly 'hard as nails' before taking them out on the road. I am well impressed with the result, i'll get some pics up with the centre caps on soon
Cheers,
Chris.
