Curious new cambelt problem.
« on: 20 October 2014, 19:39:43 »

Came to fit my new cambelt today....following the dvd advice i lined up the timing marks on the belt with the crancshaft pulley and cams 1 and 2 but the marks for cams 3 and 4 would not get within about 2" of where they should be. I removed the new belt and compared the timing marks to the old one and they were in the wrong place...i copied the old marks onto the new belt and got it fitted and timed ok. The new belt is genuine GM part number 90 530 599 39, the old one GM 9 128 500 39. The supplier tells me it is correct for my car...anyone able to explain please.

Pretty sure some aftermarket belts are marked incorrectly.

The new belt is genuine GM part number 90 530 599 39     By aftermarket do you include replacement genuine GM belts?

Sometimes there are 2 sets of marks. One white and the other yellow. You might be using the wrong set for your engine.

It doesn't really matter, as long as the timing is correct after turning over the engine and rechecking with the "binocular" tool. The markings are just a guide and many belts don't have them at all.

Yes I understand that Kevin , but its the first time I have ever done one and was following the DVD guide and took me a while to realise it wasnt my fault I couldnt line it up properly...the supplier insists the belt is correct (which it is except for the marks, they are white and only the one set of them) but were  wrongly spaced as comparison with the old belt proved.

Fair enough mate. But last two belts ive use have been contitech. last one the marked lines matched up spot on. the one before that had the marks in the wrong place as it confused me, symes and martin at the time. but got there in the end.  :y

Just used Gate's power grip kit on my 3.2 and neither the white or yellow marks lined up.

Something strange going on with these belts then....although I expected a genuine GM belt to be marked correctly!...seems not though.

I've had at least two Gates sets recently, older and newer models, with green and white lines for crank and cams 1&2 and both of these had to be put acc. to green lines. Only white lines for cams 3&4.

Lines can be of help, or they can get you mixed up. That's why GM belts don't have any markings.
