 :-/can anyone put light on teh subject why my volume control on my stearing wheel plays up now and again.down volume works fine if i try to turn volume up it also turns volume down on up control,any ideas anyone.many thanks ::)

nope but I've developed the same problem on mine :-(

from the wiring diagram, it appears that all the controls use a single wire back to the radio. What happens is that when you press a button, it connects a different resistance between ground and this wire.

I've already taken the controls out of the wheel and re-made the connections to the flyleads, which worked great ... until I drove the car again. Therefore, I'm thinking that the contact between the wheel and steering column might be the culprit, trouble is that'll probably require a steering wheel puller which I don't have ...

It's most likely to be the steering wheel end.  That's the place to start.  It may just be an intermittent up button.  If you can try a known good radio instead of yours, that'll test the other end.  (Has to be same family as yours, of course).

Bit of a pain to test.
