General Discussion Area / Considering a return
« on: 19 July 2016, 12:13:15 »
Considering coming back to an omega. Had to sell mine when the need for a 7 seater reared its head again. So the omega got sold and replaced with a galaxy. Talk of what's coming after the galaxy came up (it's still going and not expecting replacement in the immediate future) but an option came up as an idea. An omega with 7 or more seats. And my mate came across.....

Yes I'm mental enough to think it's a great idea. Ok tight spots might be an issue, and I can kiss goodbye to multi storey car parks, but this genuinely peaks my interest. I'm an hgv driver so no concerns handling it. I spend every day driving something 3x the size. Already sussed where it can be parked at home, and at work i Park my car where my wagon is parked anyway.

My only issue with this is I hate automatics with a passion. (No offence, I know a lot of you drive automatics) but they're not for me.

Does anyone know if they built these with manual boxes? Or would my hunt be in vein? Or, how hard would it be to swap the auto box for a manual?

Omega General Help / replace turbo 2.2dti advice
« on: 09 March 2015, 19:56:54 »
Hi seems my turbo is on its way out. Not looking at spending on  car anymore as it's only my backup while my galaxy gets fixed, but I've thought with the turbo looking accessible, it's something I can do if I last my hands on a cheap ish 2nd turbo. Normally I wouldn't bother doing it as they're always tucked under and behind on most engines but this seems handy. So any pointers would be appreciated to help me decide if I'll fix it up or just sell as spares/repairs when the time comes

Thanks

Omega General Help / another problem! eml under load
« on: 07 March 2015, 10:33:34 »
Right just got the leak off pipes sorted and done the fuel filter. Car been off the road for 2 months. It's a 2001 2.2dti. It's first trip is going home from work, towing my spare car back on the a frame. Every time I get to a hill, the light comes on for about 2 seconds, I can hear the turbo knocking off, then the light goes off, everything works again for about 10 seconds, then happens again, this keeps happening till I get up the hill. Any ideas of common causes? Hoping simple fix because I'm getting really p****d off with this car  >:(

Omega General Help / DTI injector leak off pipes cost
« on: 19 January 2015, 19:23:21 »
I've had it with this car I fix one thing another breaks! Grrr anyway I got the leak off pipe on cylinder 1 sorted, now 4 has gone. Chopped a smidge off the end to bodge it on as I did with 1, is now too short. That pope must be all of 2 or 3mm shorter than originally. What a useless design!

Anyway, rant over, does anyone know what I'm expecting to pay for the set again (not the piece that goes to the pump, but I'm going to do all 4 injectors to that piece)

Auto factor vs stealer if anyone knows. Thanks

Omega General Help / have I found an easy job??
« on: 15 January 2015, 17:46:11 »
Decided after much not starting my 2.2dti needs new glow plugs "here goes another simple job made impossible" I thought. So I had a look anyway, it looks incredibly simple. It can't be. A whole plastic cover and they're there looking at me on the left side (looking from standing at the front). I'm amazed. It can't be so simple!

(You may have guessed me and this car aren't the best of friends at the moment)

Omega General Help / wheel bearing cost estimate
« on: 10 January 2015, 17:48:31 »
Hi. Hot a noisy wheel bearing n/s/r on a 2001 estate DTI. Do anyone know a rough price it should be? Been quoted £175 which seems very high. Last one I had done (rover 400, same wheel) was £80. If anyone has any real life figures for theirs being done it would be helpful too.

Thanks

Omega General Help / 2.2dti starter replacement advice
« on: 03 January 2015, 16:31:49 »
Hi. Got a starter motor (thanks omegod) but he says it's not all that simple to replace and suggested booking it in. As time is of the essence, I'm keen to get it done tomorrow (only because now too dark tonight). Anyone with a step by step to how please? Thanks in advance :)

Omega General Help / 2.2dti starter compatibility
« on: 03 January 2015, 10:28:58 »
Hi. Seems my starter has died. Not surprising as it spent a couple of months with an issue causing it to have to crank for a while to start. Anyway now the starter has given up, after a cheap fix. Can I get a motor from any that uses the 2.2dti like vectra, etc? Also any advice on doing it is welcome as not done a starter before. Thanks

Omega General Help / where is egr dti
« on: 24 June 2014, 18:43:53 »
Just been told a really easy thing to check for my starting issues is to check egr isn't stuck open. Apparently it's under a cover and will see it. But I've no idea where it is. Any assistance please

Currently waiting for recovery as trying to start car has flattened battery.

Symptoms are odd. It only starts really well when is at running temperature. It starts well enough when cold enough for glow plug light to come on. Starts OK ish above glow plug light temperature but still first thing in the morning. It all but refuses to start when ambient temperature is fairly warm (19 and above, roughly).

It turns over fine, will catch the odd time but not enough and then usually eventually cough into life with white smoke out the back. Not losing coolant so I suspect just because it's flooded. The warmer the ambient temperature, the longer it takes to start.

Initially I was thinking glow plugs, until I realised they don't come on above a certain temperature. But then someone told me they still do a bit.

The suggestions I've had are glow plugs, or gunked up egr.

Car has done 137k, no oil or coolant loss, runs like a dream once started.

Ideas please before the wife kills me for buying a duff car!

Thanks

General Car Chat / convert omega estate to 7 seater
« on: 16 June 2014, 18:24:45 »
Hi. Were playing with various ideas for our holiday this year. We're going to Germany and we always drive as it's cheaper than flying and hiring a car, as well as being more flexible ie luggage etc. However between me the wife our kids and her (my step kids) there are 7 of us. In the past we've always had a 7 seater like galaxy etc, but we've always found them poorly built for their size, unreliable and in the end we'd had enough, so put the wife through her driving test and got her a Peugeot 306.

The problem now is she is dead against driving to Germany so we're looking at various options like 2 flying over (other family members are there with hired car so transport that end isn't a major problem) or either buying a galaxy etc for the holiday and selling after, or keeping it and selling her 306 as she likes galaxy's, as much a pain as they are.

This obviously puts justifying keeping the omega at risk, which I really don't want.

Anyway, the other idea I've just had is converting my omega to a 7 seater. I've heard people do it with Mondeo, vectra, Volvo and such like. Is it possible / pheasible with the omega? Obviously cost is the biggest influence. I'd like to say we could justify about £400 for it but ideally £200 ish.

Anyone know any detail about it or have any experience doing it?

Omega General Help / exhaust change issues. ideas please
« on: 10 June 2014, 20:23:48 »
Hi. Changing back and middle sections of exhaust (2.2dti estate). The bolts bolting middle and cat section have both snapped. I've tried drilling them out (admittedly my drill isn't great) but it's hardly making a dent. Any other ideas?

Couple of pictures to give an idea

I've just put new section on for now but obviously not connected up

General Car Chat / remap or tuning chip?
« on: 09 June 2014, 20:02:58 »
Hi having a debate with myself. Want a bit of extra oomph with the caravan, and a little more mpg generally. Getting about 40mpg at minute. I'd like 45/50,ish (economy is the only thing I can fault the car on)

Problem is, I'm a tight was and quotes for a remap are coming back around £175. Ideally I don't want to spend more than £100, (hoping £70 at top end really).

Problem with remaps, it involves me knowing what I'm looking for, as I'm aware since are blatant cons.

So I'm putting my discussion with myself on here for people's input.

The car is a 2001 2.2dti
