Anyone know apart from Europcar who else actually operates on site at East Mids airport? Need to drop a car off at the airport and not miles away and then get back by courtesy coach. Too much hassle with disabled relatives.

General Discussion Area / Litter and Stonehenge
« on: 21 June 2010, 12:17:30 »
had to smile. There was a piece on the BBC TV news this morning about the aftermath of the Druids etc celebrating the rising of the sun and longest day etc.

The place was a mess with litter. And this from "tree huggers" not some drink/drug fuelled party. It seems to be a modern malaise that when you have finished with something just let it fall out of your hand. Then in the background, among the army of people employed to clean up, a person had at least five goes at picking up ONE piece of litter with a stick with a grab on the end!

And people wonder what is wrong with Great Britain ;D ;D ;D

General Discussion Area / EU commission austerity measures?
« on: 18 June 2010, 14:40:16 »
At the risk of setting off the anti EU brigade again.

There is going to be or there is already pain while countries try and sort out their deficits. Fine it needs to be done.

However has the EU commission itself also slashed its spending or is that continuing unabated. Not just the cost of admin but all the billions of OUR money that is doled out for New roads, bridges, anti flood schemes. Has a brake been put on that?? I suppose the answer is no.   I bet the administrators haven't had a 5% pay cut and retirement age raised !!

General Discussion Area / Fishing and football!
« on: 16 June 2010, 18:49:01 »
A  good Spanish friend suggested we went fishing today in the nearby huge lake. Off we went and it was a lovely experience for me despite the fact that we caught diddly squat. Haven't fished for 40 years. Nice ambience, weather etc. Lots of big fish, some jumping. I even saw two terrapins! He got really narked at the lack of even a bite - we were using his never fail bait of prawns and he had two rods. We packed up at 3 to get home to watch Spain trounce Switzerland 3:1(his prediction). Oh dear. He wasn't a happy conejo.  ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

General Discussion Area / Vuvuzelas - Good or Bad? (World Cup)
« on: 14 June 2010, 17:56:18 »
Vuvuzelas are the horns played by spectators in the stands at matches (and apparently from dawn to dusk too!!

Personally I think they are a bit much. I cannot understand why the sound engineers can't drop the background level to commentator level. Mind you it is the same bunch of idiot sound engineers that manage the deafening sound effects and background racket that prevents us older folk "hearing" the actors words on films. (Any Russel Crowe film)  ;D ;D ;D ;D

I would have done it for half the actual cost!!

Seriously though. How can the Bloody Sunday inquiry have cost £195 MILLION and take 12 years to complete. Was it protracted to keep individuals in "clover"? The mind boggles at the way public money (i.e.taxes) are spent.  :'( :'( :'(

Plenty on the BBC today about the General Strike here in Spain over the so called austerity measures introduced by our Labour government to try and prop up the economy along with unemployment at 20% (29% where we live).

We probably won't actually notice the difference. After all the difference between a public servant working normally and out on strike is minute. Some civil servants have openly said that if when get paid 5% less they will do 5% less work!!

The question I would ask is will there be a similar strike in Britain after the Condems introduce their austerity measures in two weeks time? Personally I think there will be a good chance when you look at the BA strike. Lots of people cannot manage on what they earn now.

On the plus side Omegas might plummet even more in price! ;D ;D ;D ;D

General Discussion Area / Here is a car for my OOF Academy!!
« on: 24 May 2010, 20:40:14 »

As well as my own car, this would make a great addition to my OOF academy where members can holiday and also keep their hand in fixing problems. ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

El Varche (Academy Jefe)

PS if it is an OOF member, maybe you will donate it if it doesn't make the reserve!

From next months when you take your vehicle for its MOT, here in Spain, your insurance and car tax payment will be inspected too.

Unlike in the UK, car tax is paid by whoever owns the vehicle in May. It is hard to get a refund (unless the vehicle is scrapped) in other words once paid that is it.

ditto with car insurance. It is paid for a full year and that is it. Car ownership changes aren't anything like tyhe scale they are in the UK.

what a great idea. I wonder how long before the rest of Europe introduces it.

General Discussion Area / 3G speed/ signal question
« on: 11 May 2010, 09:47:09 »
Am I right in thinking that the stronger the signal shown on your computer then the faster the speed of your internet connection? In my case up to a theoretical max of 3.6M

I don't want to waste time and money trying to improve the strength of signal (e.g. by moving my PC onto the roof) if it won't improve things. I currently get 1.3 M on a good day and down to 53.6 on bad days.

How are you planning on spending the evening?

Obviously the likes of Bannjax and Nickbat will have several TV's on at the same time plus live feeds via the Internet so they can keep abreast of the results and developments and exit polls.  What about other OOFers?  ;D ;D ;D

General Discussion Area / Short duration car insurance
« on: 27 April 2010, 09:26:41 »
I am looking to buy another petrol Omega Elite from the UK as a source of parts to keep mine running.

One practicality is getting the thing back here. Is it possible nowadays to buy a week or a months worth of insurance say TPFT with foreign country use? I would use a UK relatives address.

Any suggestions?

General Discussion Area / The real issue facing Britain
« on: 28 April 2010, 13:42:16 »
All the other election stuff pales into insignificance compared with sorting out the UK debts. All of the parties are fighting shy of saying just how they are going to pay back the money. Each party only has plans for about 20% of what is actually needed with the Lib Dems having the best plan % wise.

Make no doubt about it, tough times are ahead. It will be so easy for Britain to follow Greece (despite their public sector already having taken a 10% pay cut). http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/business/8648029.stm

Here is my forecast. Spain will hit the buffers and follow Greece in July 2010. Good time to buy euros

Then in November the same will happen in the UK. Good time to sell your euros!
