Son Ben casually mentioned to me that his handbake lever suddenly came up a long way, and the handbrake now does not hold the car on a slope; nevertheless he manages hill starts by skilful use of the clutch. Cut that out, or you will soon wreck the clutch, said I. On dismantling, I see the o/s cable outer has pulled right through the coil on the semi trailing arm. I note that there a build of rust on the shoulder of the outer cable end which may have helped it slowly work its way through the coil.
My question is - is it sufficient to clean up the shoulder and hammer the coil to a decent fit, or should I make a washer to fit over the cable end to ensure it does not happen again.

I have just bent the coil part so its tighter in the past. And reattached the cable. Never had any issues.

There should be a plastic sleeve on the cable that locates on the lock tab. The tab itself is simply bent back over it...
Also the tab does two jobs, one it keeps the cable from hanging down and, two, it helps maintain a smooth curve to ease the movement of the cable within the outer sheath.
Sounds like the handbrake has been yanked to excess compounded by a seized mechanism on that side :-\
Fix the cause, not the symptom ;)

I have just bent the coil part so its tighter in the past. And reattached the cable. Never had any issues.

Tab is the bent piece of metal.
The plastic sleeve is just that, with a lip on each end to keep it seated behind the tab.
Yours is clearly either missing or out of shot.

I imagined I would easily find 15mm internal diameter steel washers on google or e-bay - no such luck.

there is no plastic sleeve where the cable locates in the trailing arm loop/brkt. just relocate it and hammer the loop round it so it doesn't pull through. :y

Thanks to all for help. Job is now done. I bashed the metal loop back into shape so that it would retain the brake cable outer end, as I had done before on Jonny's 2.2, had no choice there because the brake lever adjuster was rusted solid. Jonny's car is running fine after 4 months, so hopefully it was a permanent fix.

.its a common thing to happen and can be in worst cases the loop that’s got weaker / thinner due to rust or the end lip on the cable that’s rusted away a bit making it smaller and thus easier to slip through.

Thanks for the thoughts. In my posted pic both the loop and cable end look little rusted, so there's ground for hope of a good result.
