Title: Bigger Horn? (Zafira)
Post by: tunnie on 03 August 2019, 22:07:08
I've always felt the Zafira's horn could do with upgrading, it's very weak little "peep" type sound. Not nearly aggressive enough, always found Omega one decent enough.

Had to avoid someone reversing up lane 2 of M6, on way back from Ireland  :o

I really wanted a better horn then!

Fit second hand Omega or anything else out there?

It's probably only got one horn, when what's needed is a matched  pair: one high, and one low tone. The best horns are a pair of  the traditional cast Lucas horns used from the 50s, as they're bloody loud before you clean and adjust them. Hard to find now and expensive when you do.

But more practically, a pair from any more modern car(like the Omega) is a good bet. One that matches your car's plug, then wire them in series.

Re-use plug from Zafira one grafted to Omega horn loom?

I have seen a few videos of train horns being fitted, but that maybe tad too much.  ;D

If you feel you need a bigger horn Tunnie, Viagra is now available without prescription from pharmacies.  :)

That's the last thing he needs. He needs to put his "horn" away before he outgrows the Zafira and starts looking for a VW bus. ;D

Not sure MrsT would appreciate loss of boot for a compressor  :D

Doing the same job on Mrs VXL's Astra. Have the twin horns from an Omega and acquired the loom, just need to modify the pluggable loom end so it can be swapped back in the future.

I can't see an advert for the Maserati Sprint horns - 2 trumpet shrill granny-scarers - but these 3 trumpet ones could be even louder!

I've got a cheap set of Italian twin trumpet air horns on the Westfield. They certainly get the message across and have worked happily for 19 years and counting. ;D

Can,t you just get a single air horn on top of a canister of compressed air? Then just stick it out of the window as and when required. :D

Presumably it would need tethering to the vehicle in order to be MoT compliant...

Couple of cable ties should do it. ;)

I tend to use the brakes, steering or GO pedal rather than the horn ,
 I can't remember the last time I used the horn  :P ;D

As a Zafira is basically an Astra underneath i'm surprised because the two Astra Gs I had both had twin tone horns like the Omega had. In fact I replace the pathetic parp horn on SWMBO's Citroen with a pair of horns from the Astra I broke.
You sure one of the original horns hasn't died?

Depends what model Zaf it is. My "A" was mid range and had a single while the "B" is SRI and has twin.
My 2.5 diesel elite estate only had a single

My 1975 T150V Triumph Trident had a very quiet horn & after a couple of near misses I replaced it with an air horn compressor (about 2/3 diameter of an oil filter cartridge & the same depth) a couple of air pipes & the horns. Disadvantage is the compressor took 0.5seconds to spin up but when it did everybody within a half mile radius heard you, so recommended if you want to be heard & noticed. :y :y :y
